Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Foundation for the Advancement of Catholic Schools to support and assist the parish schools and the Archdiocesan high schools by providing funding for scholarships and special projects. The Foundation believes that Catholic schools provide students with an "education for a lifetime," especially for the poor and underserved children and youth of the Archdiocese of Hartford.
About This Cause
Background FACS is a 501(c)(3) corporation that was founded in 1982. This was during the time of Archbishop John F. Whealon and the former Superintendent of Catholic Schools Rev. James G. Fanelli. The original purpose of FACS founding was to support Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Hartford. For more than 150 years, these schools have educated thousands of citizens with not only academic knowledge, but also with an emphasis on moral values. Impact FACS has helped students throughout the Archdiocese of Hartford by providing over $400,000 of scholarship assistance each year. We do this in two ways. Those donors who desire to help children directly, have entrusted our organization to administer scholarship funds created from their generous donations. The funds are held in our portfolio in separate "sleeves". From these funds, we distribute a large number of scholarships annually based on the donors criteria. Second, we raise additional funds by hosting at least three events annually. Net proceeds of each event provide more assistance each year. These events include the: 1. Archbishop's Saint Patrick's Day Breakfast 2. FORE FACS Golf Classic 3. Archbishop's Columbus Day Breakfast. We are able to give assistance to both primary and secondary school students of all faiths attending Catholic high schools and elementary schools. We assist students in the Hartford, New Haven and Litchfield Counties which make up the Archdiocese of Hartford. Any support we receive either directly or through these events means a great deal to the many students and families who desire this outstanding education. Thanks to the thoughtful consideration and generosity of our loyal donors, we have been assisting students for over 34 years. We are grateful to our many FACS friends who have faith in our foundation, who understand the importance of their gift and who believe in our mission. CEO Statement What is so special about FACS? This organization, under the direction of a dedicated Board of Trustees and staff, is made up of business people, educators, and both lay and religious persons. This organization is committed to a great cause and delivers valuable outcomes. FACS has been effectively helping children throughout Connecticut for decades. With a positive record of encouraging children to "pay this forward," the Trustees have set an amazing example for these recipients by showing them what philanthropy is in the most unselfish way. Those working with FACS believe that a quality education must be accessible to all students and that the lack of financial resources should not be an obstacle to this education. FACS is all about enabling families to access the best education and our goal is to continue to award scholarships to students who show academic promise for many more decades to come. Board Chair Statement This year marks the 34th anniversary of FACS. Since the Foundation’s incorporation in 1983, FACS has provided nearly $14 million in assistance throughout our Archdiocese. Each year we receive and process hundreds of scholarship applications and are proud to announce that, to date, for the 2017-2018 School Year we have awarded $371,891 to 271 recipients. And that’s just a start. Those numbers will grow after additional scholarship distributions are made from the upcoming Archbishop’s Columbus Day Breakfast. Last year’s Archbishop’s Columbus Day Breakfast was held on October 7th and earned its highest net proceeds since the event’s inception. With a generous match from the Archbishop, FACS was able to grant more than $82,000 in tuition assistance to over 120 students in 11 Catholic Schools in Greater New Haven. Our guests enjoyed speaker and sports legend Bobby Valentine sharing his humor and inspiration, talking about respect, responsibility and reality, his version of the “3 R’s,” and how vitally important these concepts are in educating our children. An increase in sponsorships and continuing loyal support made the Archbishop’s St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast our most successful ever. Our guest speaker was author, Mark Kennedy Shriver, a returning FACS Friend who not only enlightened but inspired us. All were equally moved by a poignant story from FACS scholarship recipient Mary who just graduated from Northwest Catholic High School. She shared how important Catholic education is to her and how valuable FACS scholarship assistance has been in helping her attend Catholic school. She touched the hearts of all who heard her speak. We hosted a full field of golfers at the FORE FACS Golf Classic, held May 15that Shelter Harbor Golf Club. The net proceeds from this event surpassed prior years. We are grateful to our sponsors for their generous donations of raffle and auction items. Your support changes not only the life of a child but it changes communities. With your continued sponsorship and partnership, FACS will reach our goal of helping deserving children in each and every Archdiocesan school every year. On behalf of Archbishop Leonard P. Blair, the FACS Board of Trustees and Staff, and all FACS scholarship recipients, THANK YOU most sincerely for your enduring generosity.
