Mission Statement
The mission of The Exchange Club Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse of Southern CT Inc. is to stop the cycle of child abuse by teaching positive parenting skills and strengthening the family. We address the needs of families living in abusive situations and whose risk is exacerbated by poverty, addiction, or mental health issues.
About This Cause
We were founded in 1989 through the collaboration of DCF, local agencies, law enforcement, courts, medical professionals, community members and the Exchange Clubs of CT. We have consistently provided parent education and home visitation services since our founding. In addition, we have provided supervised visitation services to children in foster/relative care as well as parents involved in Superior Court custody proceedings. We are an accredited agency in a 70+ member collaborative of child abuse prevention agencies nationwide that use the National Exchange model. That collaborative was founded in 1979 and offers technical support, annual symposium training, and mandates accreditation using the network’s Standards of Operation and Practice. The Exchange model has prescribed components and all of our staff is trained in that model. Organizational Purpose/Goal: Center’s programs improve the stabilization of the family by ensuring first and foremost that the home environment is safe, that the children and family’s basic needs for food, shelter, and clothing have been met, and that the family has knowledge of and access to the community support and programs needed to keep them out of impoverished conditions going forward. Because the work is both education and strength-based, families are motivated towards positive change and flourishing. The Center is a family-centered practice, strength-based, home-based, and evidence-based. The goal of our programs is to prevent and treat child abuse/neglect by addressing the specific needs of the identified diverse populations of the children and families we serve in our catchment area. The Center provides education and support services to families in our catchment area that strengthen the parenting and life skills of the parents/caregivers and prevent child abuse/neglect within families. Our services are family-centered and strength-based. They focus on increasing: child safety in the home, reflective emotional intelligence skills that increase healthy coping and problem-solving abilities, positive parenting skills, and social support systems advocacy for families. These support systems include, but are not limited to, tending to housing, medical, dental and scholastic needs.
