About This Cause
The Plainville Community Food Pantry is a non-profit outreach agency that provides food, energy assistance, clothing, crisis intervention and referral services to individuals in need. Food Assistance: What makes this program unique is the client-choice format we offer. This format provides food subsidies to low income families in crisis, while nurturing their ability to be independent and take control of their life. Our clients are encouraged to bring a shopping list and “shop” for their own groceries. Clothing: Our donated clothing program provides clients registered on our program the opportunity to “shop” for clothing for themselves and their families. This program has expanded greatly in recent years with an increasing number of clients coming from out-of-town to utilize this service. Crisis Intervention & Referral Services: This goal of this program is to have the clients help themselves by providing information about, as well as referrals to, other programs and services that the client may be eligible to participate in or receive benefits through. Emergency Energy Assistance: The Plainville Fuel Bank is currently providing emergency energy assistance, in many cases preventing utility shut offs, out of oil or propane to families who are in a financial crisis and who have exhausted all other resources. Holiday Basket Program: Holiday Baskets include all of the special fixings for a holiday meal. Included in these baskets are; a turkey or chicken, fresh fruit and vegetables, and a week’s worth of groceries. The households registered on our program receive these baskets three times a year: Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Secret Santa Program: The children on this program are adopted by a “Secret Santa.” Our community volunteers, or “Santa’s”, purchase gifts for the child and return the wrapped gifts to the PCFP. The Pantry staff ensures that the child’s parents or guardian receive the child’s gifts the week before Christmas. This way they can be placed under the tree for Christmas morning. Back-to-School Program: This program improves the self-esteem of less-fortunate children, by evening the playing field. Each child registered with the PCFP is provided with a new backpack, socks, underwear, lunchbox, as well as age-appropriate study supplies. We were able to give out gift certificates for shoes, a first day of school outfit and a haircut. Community Outreach Program: We provide clothing, furniture and household items to needy residents in the Central Connecticut area. We partner with caseworkers from DSS (Department of Social Services), DCF (Department of Children and Families), and Human Resources Agencies. Our network also includes Bristol Community Organization, The Friendship Center, Wheeler Clinic, Klingberg Family Center, Covenant to Care, VNA, and others. Women, Infants and Children (WIC): The Plainville Community Food Pantry is a regional hosting site for this federal program which provides vouchers for nutritional staples, as well as nutrition counseling. English as a Second Language (ESL): In collaboration with the Adult Education Program of Plainville, we have been hosting ESL for four years. Students from all over the world can attend this class two days per week at our facility.
