About This Cause

Horizons is a unique educational support experience for low-income children that begins in Pre-K and extends through high school. A national network of high-quality academic enrichment programs, Horizons provides long-term, deep engagement to students with a broad range of academic ability, and to their families. Our hands-on approach is designed to fuel a life-long passion for learning, through a blend of high-quality academics with arts, sports, cultural enrichment, and confidence-building challenges, particularly swimming. As a multi-year summer program with year-round supports, we create partnerships with independent schools, colleges, and universities to serve at-risk students over the course of their Pre-K–12 academic careers. Horizons students have the opportunity to experience success in a new setting that, over time, becomes an inspirational and stable learning environment for themselves, their families, and their communities. Through 50 years of Horizons program experience, we’ve seen, and understand, the importance of in-depth, out-of-school-time instruction to help our students achieve consistent gains in reading and math. We know that providing exposure to a variety of enrichment experiences tests students’ limits and inspires them to excel to their highest potential. These new experiences broaden students’ perspectives on the possibilities for their futures and opportunities available to them in their communities, yielding improved social skills, self-confidence, and willingness to try new things. Through these experiences, students learn to negotiate their environments and attain their goals. With 50 affiliate sites in 17 states in 2016 and growing, Horizons has served as a pivotal link between public and private education communities for over half a century. Through Horizons’ proven model, our students achieve consistent annual gains in reading and math of approximately 8-12 weeks each summer, as compared to the typical 8-12 week loss most children from low-income households experience. Horizons students return to school in the fall better prepared, more motivated to learn, and more engaged in their future. The role of the Horizons National office is to initiate, support, and ensure the quality and sustainability of Horizons affiliate programs throughout the country. All partner host schools sign an Affiliation Agreement, and Horizons National provides the tools to start and run exceptional programs. We have designed our affiliate structure to encourage local independence while providing the support of centralized services for teachers, staff, and board members network-wide. The central office also facilitates peer support relationships between affiliate directors and boards. The Horizons funding model accesses national and regional donors through the central office, while the affiliate sites raise their own operating costs through local resources.
