Mission Statement
The Manchester Police Activities League, Inc. (PAL) was established in 1992 to foster positive relationships between youth and police officers. Today PAL creates opportunities and activities for positive interactions between Youth and police and civilian mentors in support of youth development and success.
About This Cause
HISTORY: PAL was formed in 1992 by local police officers who had a goal of becoming more involved with the local youth and to work with at-risk children. PURPOSE: To reduce juvenile crime by fostering opportunities for positive interactions between police officers, civilian mentors, and youth in Manchester in support of youth success. Youth who participate in PAL programs are encouraged to maintain healthy relationships, show respect and courtesy to others, achieve academically, and stay physically fit. PAL services youth, ranging from ages 5-18 years of age residing in Manchester or within the greater Manchester area. 98% of the children served by the Manchester PAL programs live within the borders of the Town of Manchester. PROGRAMS: Sports & Recreation Programs: includes Martial Arts (Karate, Judo, & Taekwondo), Mountain Biking, Double Dutch Club, Summer Basketball Series & Tournament. Academic Support & Mentoring: East Side Homework/Activities program focuses on the educational and social-developmental needs of youth (Grades 1-4) residing in the Spruce St area. Mentoring and interactions with positive role models also arranged with participants including visits from Police and related parties. PAL Outreach: includes building relationships and promoting positive interactions with youth in local group homes, in schools in support of officer interaction, and special programs and events for a variety of groups and other community based organization such as bike-safety, Women’s Self Defense, organizing K-9 demonstrations, and Internet Safety for Parents. COMMUNITY OUTCOMES -- Increase positive interactions between police officers and youth. -- Decrease juvenile crime and violence in the Manchester Community -- To reduce future poverty in Manchester through Academic Success Support and Mentoring -- Add value to Manchester’s Master Plan for Children, Youth and Families as well as to contribute to community policing efforts in town. -- Partner with other organizations to have a greater impact on the health of youth and families living, working, or going to school in Manchester, CT.
