Mission Statement

Mill River Park Collaborative’s motto is connecting People and Nature. A 31-acre Park and 3-mile greenway are transforming the heart of Stamford -- serving as a catalyst for growth, and as a new venue for healthful active recreation. The Park provides a new model for redefining urban life and attracting the new, young urban residents; it is the natural balance the city’s robust built environment, dramatically improving quality of life in Stamford. The creation of Mill River Park has been recognized as a uniquely comprehensive example of the restoration of the natural environment in urban contexts. The Collaborative has restored a river benefiting migratory fish and other aquatic species while creating a habitat corridor that connects to the Long Island Sound.

About This Cause

The Collaborative manages the design, construction, operations, maintenance and programming of Mill River Park. In 2013, we opened the first large 12-acre area of the park. In June of 2015, we broke ground on a carousel and event pavilion. And, in this upcoming year, we will begin construction on the next 0.5 mile stretch of parkland, as well as an ice skating rink and fountain. We learned from other successful urban park transformations that success relies on creating a compelling design, keeping it clean and safe, and keeping it well programmed so it is fully activated, which reinforces safety and the perception of the space as a civic focal point. Community Programs and Events: The Park is the perfect setting for fun and engaging community programs, providing the community positive, safe, and engaging activities to build a connection with nature, the Park, and fellow community members. • Mill River Park Fit Club program offers several weekly fitness classes, like: Zumba, yoga, Bollywood style fitness, Mommy & Me stroller fitness, and boot camp. • Various seasonal events keep the community engaged with the Park, such as: Family Movies in the Park on Fridays, children’s animated movies on Saturdays, Fun Saturday Morning children’s programs, food festivals, and different live arts and performance events. An annual Halloween Party provides safe trick-or-treating. • Mill River Playground was the Park’s first structure, built with the vision of being a place for children throughout Stamford to exercise and play together. • The David & Marian Nissen Carousel brings year-round enjoyment, including 30 hand-carved horses and animals, and two handicapped accessible features. The surrounding Pavilion allows for special celebrations and private events. • The Steven and Alexandra Cohen Skating Center & Fountain will host an ice skating center. From spring through fall, an interactive fountain will offer entertainment. Education: Mill River Park Collaborative provides experiential learning programs for Stamford Public Schools, focusing on developing the resources necessary to support STEM learning. • Environmental Educational Program collaborates with 4th grade classes in five local schools to create a river ecosystem based curriculum aligned to Connecticut Science Standards allowing students to participate in field based “real world” science. • Mill River Stewards internship program gives high school students hands-on environmental learning and career workshops. The Stewards engage in several projects, enriching field trips, and career-related workshops during their internship. • Mill River Learning Center Curriculum Development: Mill River Park Collaborative is committed to building a curriculum for the future Learning Center to best assure maximum utilization and educational impact. We envision a curriculum based on best practice to support Environmental Science learning to enrich the lives of the children in our community, particularly children who have not had exposure, or the opportunity, to appreciate the natural environment in a positive way. When developing our curriculum, we will collaborate with recognized leaders in the field of Environmental Education, including members of Cornell University’s Expanding Capacity in Environmental Education Project (EECapacity) and the Connecticut Audubon Society. Mill River Park Collaborative is transforming life in Downtown Stamford and in the surrounding neighborhoods. Through the Park, its events, and programs, we are creating a dramatic increase in open space, changing the urban landscape and economic dynamic of the greater Stamford community for generations to come.
