Mission Statement
OUR MISSION To promote language building and literacy for children, beginning at birth, and to support parents as their babies’ first teachers. OUR VISION Every family — regardless of income and primary language — will understand the critical importance of early childhood literacy and will take an active role in their child’s reading development. All children in Connecticut will have books of their own.
About This Cause
Book for Babies, our flagship program, delivers a new book to more than half of all babies born in Connecticut and a guide to each of their mothers on hospital maternity units. The program also sends free follow-up books during the babies’ first year. Partnered with 12 hospitals, we reach about 22,000 newborns and their parents annually. A dedicated corps of some 50 volunteers works both in the hospitals to talk to mothers and elsewhere to prepare materials. Since inception, the program has given: • 672,000 Literacy Packets in hospitals to mothers and newborns, most of whom were visited by trained volunteers; • 160,000 other books for children visiting mothers in hospital maternity units; • 65,000 new books in the follow-up. The program has expanded into primary care centers, 40 Family Resource Centers and in-home visiting programs, delivering: thousands of DVDs on building children’s language skills; In the Womb brochures; and children’s books. Books for Kids continues to support parents as their children’s first teachers. With free books, it keeps children on the path to literacy and achievement. Two new initiatives focus outreach to tens of thousands of families living at-risk. Since inception, the program has given: • more than 1.25 million books to: families; non-profit agencies; teachers; doctors and other health care providers; and many others; • literacy workshops to: parents; in-home visitors; child care staff; and teachers. Initiatives launched in 2014 are: • creating unique Partnerships with agencies serving low-income, high-needs families. (We currently have six.) • setting up across Connecticut permanent Book Places/Rincóns del Libro at host sites already helping families. Free children’s books, literacy info and workshops
