Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide innovative health and wellness services to all, with the goal of African American health equity. We offer medical, dental, behavioral health, recovery, health education and wrap-around care for patients with Medi-Cal, insurance, or who are un/under-insured. Healthcare services are available from four clinic sites: Marin City, SF Bayview Hunters Point Clinic, and the Marin Family Birth Center. Your gift supports these critical programs that make poor people well: • Youth behavioral health • Nutrition education • Chronic disease management • Park Prescription exercise in surrounding open space • Midwifery care to impact maternal health disparities for low-income moms
About This Cause
Marin City Health & Wellness was founded in 2006 by a grassroots effort to provide culturally sensitive care for local, low-income residents experiencing poor health outcomes and lack of access to healthcare. We now serve an incredibly diverse patient base (in terms of ethnicity), but see and deal every day with Social Determinants of Health – the reality that a patient’s zip code has a greater impact on well-being than their genetic code. Since 2016 we have: • Opened a satellite clinic in San Francisco’s Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood. We are only the second dental office serving a community of 34,000. • Launched Marin County’s first freestanding birth center in San Rafael. The Marin Family Birth Center provides an important choice for all women seeking midwifery and perinatal care outside of a hospital or home birth setting. We know that perinatal care by a midwife can impact maternal disparities—Black mothers are nearly four times more likely than white or Latina women to loose their or their baby's life within a year of childbirth. • Established an innovative new program using Medication Assisted Treatment for recovery from opioid and alcohol addiction. • Served nearly 80 Marin City youth each year through programs that create positive change in behaviors, improved academics, and an on-campus presence at five Marin schools. • Provided 13,816 visits per year with care providers for medical, dental, behavioral health, recovery services, health education and chronic disease management—a 22% increase over last year. Here are five ways that you can help us to provide health and wellness to those in need: 1. Come to our doctors, dentists and therapists for care – in Marin City, San Rafael or San Francisco’s Bayview Hunters Point. We accept most insurance, or can help you register for Medi-Cal, Covered CA, WIC (Women Infants & Children) and CalFresh food stamps. If you’re happy with your healthcare, please refer someone! 2. Buy everyday paper products from a social enterprise run by The Defenders program for young Black men age 11-18. Order household supplies for kitchen and bath online at www.defenderspaper.org and one of our Defenders will deliver your products. 3. See our work in action.
