Common Ground Relief fosters environmental and community stewardship so that residents of Southeast Louisiana can survive and thrive, now and in the future.
About This Cause
Common Ground Relief was established in September 2005 to provide disaster relief in the Greater New Orleans area following Hurricane Katrina. With its origins as a community-initiated, volunteer organization that offered assistance, mutual aid and support, this work gave hope to local communities by working with them, providing for their immediate needs and emphasizes people working together to rebuild their lives in sustainable ways. In these initial years, Common Ground Relief focused its efforts where it was needed most – providing housing, health, clothing, pro bono legal services, and other core needs to the residents of New Orleans. In late 2007, as the world-wide recession worsened and the rebuilding of houses commenced, Common Ground Relief partnered with a local general contractor to build affordable, energy efficient housing through the State of Louisiana’s Road Home program. Common Ground Relief ended the use of large numbers of volunteers in order to create employment and job training opportunities for residents displaced by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. A series of Section 3 Small Businesses were created to accomplish this goal. An elevated model house, with a stormwater filtration system using native plant material, was built at 1804 Deslonde Street in the Lower Ninth Ward. 1804 Deslonde Street now houses volunteers working on our wetlands restoration projects. In late 2008, the Anita Roddick Advocacy Center was created to provide community services and house volunteers at 1800 Deslonde Street in the Lower Ninth Ward. In 2013, Common Ground Relief’s leadership revised the mission statement to reflect a forward-looking focus – “to create resilient Gulf Coast communities that are environmentally sustainable, financially viable and personally cohesive.” While the mission and organization have evolved, Common Ground Relief remains committed to its grassroots, volunteer-based approach to community transformation and sustainability. In 2015, Common Ground Relief leadership determined that the most effective way of achieving the organization’s mission was to focus squarely on restoring and preserving Louisiana’s disappearing coastal wetlands. Common Ground Relief leads educational wetlands restoration projects with a variety of government, tribal, NGO, and private partners, and plants over 5,000 trees and 20,000 plugs of marsh grass annually. Common Ground Relief remains committed to community care in addition to environmental stewardship. Food insecurity has long been a concern in the Lower Ninth Ward and was exacerbated by COVID-19 and the collapse of New Orleans' tourism-dependent local economy. In response, Common Ground Relief has partnered with lowernine.org and Second Harvest Food Bank New Orleans to launch the Levee Food Pantry as a long-term project to help ensure that every New Orleanian keeps food on their table. The Levee Pantry opened November 2020 at 1804 Deslonde Street following biweekly mobile food distributions run out of a Lower Ninth Ward parking lot for 8 months. The Levee Pantry team served over 130,000 pounds of food to over 1,400 unique households during mobile food distributions. Common Ground Relief’s achievements: - Created 9 food/water, tool lending and clothing distribution centers in 7 of Louisiana’s southern parishes - Established the Common Ground Health Clinic with seven mobile clinics * - Established the Common Ground Free Legal Clinic * - Established a women’s and family shelter * - Built neighborhood computer centers and offered free tech support to local non-profits - Gutted 3,000 houses, businesses, churches and schools in the Ninth Ward - Provided bioremediation services for mold and soil toxin removal - Engaged over 65,000 volunteers in post-disaster recovery - Provided hands-on environmental curriculum to local K-12 students - Established the state-licensed Native Plant Nursery and Cabane Coypu Environmental Learning Center - Partnered with colleges and universities, from across the country, for environmental volunteer projects - Plant approximately 5,000 bottomland hardwood trees per year and more than 20,000 plugs of marsh grass per year - Contributed an estimated value of volunteer labor in excess of $40 million * The Common Ground Health Clinic is now a 501c3 non profit operating in Algiers. The shelters are now operating as the New Orleans Women’s & Children’s Shelter and the Common Ground Legal Clinic is now affiliated with The Louisiana Civil Justice Center.
