Mission Statement

Our mission is to help each person achieve his or her personal best

About This Cause

Our mission is to help children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities achieve their personal best. Eight founding families who had a dream to create something better for their children founded The Arc of the Farmington Valley (Favarh) in 1958, as a non-profit community-based human service agency. This was a time when children with intellectual disabilities were not welcome in public schools and community services did not yet exist. Despite these and other barriers, our founders created the Favarh Day School in the basement of a local church. They raised money through tag sales, bake sales and other fundraisers. They persevered because they understood that without an education, opportunities for success would be limited. They also believed what others refused to believe; that their children could learn and that their children could achieve. Today, our friends and family members with intellectual disabilities are living the dreams of our founders. They are attending public schools alongside their same age peers. Community services like Favarh exist and provide opportunities for success beyond public education. FAVARH presently assists over 300 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families through a wide variety of supports and services. Programming has grown and diversified in an effort to meet the ever-changing needs of the people we serve, and these changes have kept Favarh at the forefront of providing unique opportunities for success. Services include: • Residential care options that include family orientated group homes, supported apartment living, and in-home supports for those still living with their families; • Employment supports that include job training, placement, and follow along support; • Small Businesses which provide employment opportunities: Yard Maintenance, Firewood Products and Services, Clothing Preparation, Document Scanning, and our Contracted Services (Volume Mail and Shredding Services); • Competitive Employment options that include placement at area businesses; • Non-employment adult enrichment, community experience, volunteering, and senior programs; • Clinical supports including nursing, counseling, and other therapeutic services; • Respite care programs and in-home service; • Training in self-help, independence building, and other adult daily living skills; • Sponsoring organization for Special Olympics Unified Sports including people with and without disabilities playing together in year round sports that include: floor hockey, soccer, basketball, Flag Football, and soccer; • Integrated summer programs; • Transition programs/internships for students aged 15-21; • Unified Personnel Life Activities (Recreation) and Creative Art programs; • Health and Wellness programs; and • Transportation services including our fleet of 63 vehicles.
