Mission Statement
BCS partners with people to overcome obstacles on their pathway toward self-determination. Since 1866, founded on the principle of neighbors helping neighbors, BCS has worked in neighborhoods impacted by systemic poverty. Today, we continue to strengthen communities by fostering the educational success of children, the leadership development of youth, the employment and housing stability of adults, the advancement of individuals living with disabilities, and the empowerment of seniors and families. Our work is rooted in the struggle for social justice and through action and advocacy, we commit to shine a light on barriers that perpetuate inequitable systems as a part of the collective effort to ignite change. Our Vision BROOKLYN FOR ALL BCS believes all Brooklynites should have the resources, education, opportunities, and safety they need to thrive. We envision healthy and sustainable communities, where members are engaged as leaders, neighborhoods draw from their strengths and generations flourish together.
About This Cause
Founded in 1866, BCS is one of Brooklyn's oldest and largest providers of social services, focusing on low-income areas and communities of color. We have counseled countless families at risk of separation; supported and stabilized people with psychiatric illnesses; helped adults with physical and developmental disabilities participate fully in the community; enabled people to move from welfare to work; and offered guidance, educational services and support to children. We have clients who are living with mental disabilities, who are unemployed, who need housing or developing social skills. We run two homeless shelters, one for women with mental illness and the other, the only one of its kind in the city, for young single women. We run programs for adults living with mental illness that help them with employment and access to services. We run after school programs with an emphasis on education. We have family services that keep children with their parents and programs for non-custodial fathers. Our comprehensive programs serve clients and families across the areas of early childhood education, youth development and afterschool programs, family counseling and support services, workforce and job training development, community living and life skills programs for adults with intellectual disabilities and /or mental health concerns, health and wellness programs, supportive housing and shelters, adult basic education and English as a second or foreign language services, and we are on-call to provide disaster recovery case management and relief services. Today, with a staff of 400 and 900 volunteers, we serve more than 20,000 Brooklyn residents each year, from every zip code in Brooklyn, at some 30 different sites on their quests to create better futures for themselves. Our client ages range from 0 to 99. The vast majority of BCS clients are people of color who have household incomes at or below the federal poverty threshold.
