Mission Statement

YWCA Brooklyn is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

About This Cause

Founded in 1888, YWCA Brooklyn is a unique, nonsectarian grassroots nonprofit organization that receives no financial support from our association with YWCA USA, nor are we affiliated with any other YWCA in New York City. We have been a champion for gender equity and racial justice for over 130 years, as the first YWCA in the country to racially integrate in 1943 and a leader in both the women’s rights and civil rights movements. Today, YWCA Brooklyn's mission-driven work includes providing: - Over 300 permanent, affordable housing units and trauma-informed supportive services for low-income and homeless women, the majority of whom are of color and are survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking and exploitation; - Our college access and leadership program that advances educational outcomes and promotes the economic empowerment of girls of color from poverty-impacted communities and aims to create the next generation of leaders in communities of color; - English-language, computer literacy and citizenship classes for immigrant women that expand their economic mobility opportunities; - Domestic violence prevention, anti-racism, civic engagement, and women’s wellness initiatives; and - Conveniently located subsidized offices, event space, and meeting and training facilities for our nonprofit and civic partners in the Brooklyn community.
