Mission Statement

St. Mary's mission is to improve the health and quality of life for children with special needs and their families. We are New York's largest and most experienced provider of long-term care for children with medically complex conditions and operate New York's City's only pediatric post-acute inpatient facility, having been founded in 1870 as New York City’s first children’s hospital. Following hospitalizations in acute care facilities for complications from premature birth, illness, and injury, or when special services are needed, children and their families come to St. Mary's to receive care, learn to manage their illness or injury, and achieve a better quality of life. Many among this medically complex population are discharged from acute-care facilities with no clear plan for ongoing treatment and rehabilitation. It is these children and their families for whom St. Mary’s services are most essential.

About This Cause

Located in Bayside, Queens, our 97-bed inpatient facility - St. Mary's Hospital for Children - is designed for children with the highest degree of medical complexity. This facility also provides medical day care to children and young adults, medical early education, a multidisciplinary Feeding Disorders Program, and a K-12 public school that educates our long-term inpatients. Additionally, our Home Care Programs reach nearly 2,000 medically fragile children each day throughout greater New York City and Long Island, making St. Mary’s one of the largest providers of long-term home healthcare for children in New York State. St. Mary’s children present with a broad spectrum of conditions, including chronic illness, serious injury, complications of premature birth, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, severe asthma, congenital heart disease, HIV/AIDS, and neurological, respiratory and orthopedic disorders. These conditions often require long-term, complex, interdisciplinary care from St. Mary’s team of trained pediatric specialists, including physicians, skilled nurses, speech, occupational and physical therapists, nutritionists, psychologists, social workers and others. As a vital safety net provider in New York City, St. Mary’s provides care to some of the city’s most economically disadvantaged families. Our diverse patient population identifies as 25% Latino, 20% African-American, 35% Caucasian, 10% Asian, and 10% other ethnicity or choosing not to be identified. A majority of our patients (90%) live in economically disadvantaged households, as evidenced by eligibility for Medicaid and/or subsidized school lunches. Without our services, many of our patients would be forced to receive treatment in less family-friendly acute care facilities, and others would simply be forced to go without proper care.
