Mission Statement
Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement is a community-based, non-profit organization providing comprehensive services and programs to youth, families, immigrants and seniors in the western Queens community. Strongly influenced by the work of settlement house pioneers in New York, one of the most influential journalists and social reformers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Jacob A. Riis, collaborated with the King’s Daughters, an organization of Episcopalian church women, to establish the King’s Daughters Settlement House in 1888. In 1901, the organization was renamed Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement (aka Riis Settlement) in honor of its founder. The mission of Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement is to build and strengthen underserved communities in Western Queens and to act as a catalyst for change. We are not just a place to go, but "a place to grow."
About This Cause
Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement works to level the playing field and give the youth, immigrants and older adults of the economically-challenged communities of western Queens access to the great opportunities they deserve. We depend on donations from individuals like you to help provide our free services. For over 135 years, Riis Settlement has maintained a reputation of working with community residents and providing quality services to those who need them most. Below are examples of ways your gift can help: $20 helps provide breakfast and lunch for one senior participant for five full days. $50 provides five hours of tutoring for one child. $200 provides 10 hours of English instruction for non-English speakers. $350 helps pay for one child to attend summer camp five days a week for seven weeks.
