About This Cause

Lexington School for the Deaf, a private, non-profit school was founded in 1864 by Isacc and Hannah Rosenfeld, who wanted to provide an education for their deaf daughter. By 1880, funds were raised to establish a school on Lexington Avenue in New York City. In 1968, the school was relocated to East Elmhurst, Queens, to accommodate the growing student body. Today, Lexington is the largest school for the deaf in New York State with a current enrollment of 220 students in preschool through twelfth grade, as well as 40 infants and toddlers in the Ready to Learn deaf infant-parent program. Lexington serves a diverse student body, reflecting over 26 home languages, from throughout the five NYC boroughs as well as adjacent counties. The school’s programs include a deaf parent-infant toddler program, a preschool program, and the elementary, middle and high school. The Foreign Language Transition program supports the transition of newly arrived students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Our special needs classes serve students with developmental and communication challenges. Lexington maintains a student to teacher ratio of 6:1:1 in the lower grades and 8:1:1 in the upper grades to ensure a high level of attention from our Master’s prepared teachers and instructional assistants. Based upon their individual education plan (IEP) students may receive speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, vision therapy, and mental health counseling. The school also offers a 14-bed residential program (Mondays through Thursdays) for upper school students who need additional academic support. The Lexington School for the Deaf Foundation is the fundraising entity for the school and the other Lexington agencies. Other Services Lexington provides employment and economic empowerment services to the deaf through the Lexington Vocational Services Center. Each year, the Center provides approximately 250 deaf adults with job preparation, placement, coaching and supportive employment services. Staff work closely with employers to ensure a deaf-friendly workplace. Lexington’s Center for Mental Health Services provides outpatient counseling services to deaf adults and children. Services include an Article 31 mental health clinic, art therapy, support groups for deaf families, and outreach to deaf patients in New York City psychiatric units. Lexington’s Center for Hearing/Speech Services provides screening and diagnostic hearing tests (audiological testing) and hearing aid fittings to approximately 3,000 people every year. Clients range in age from infants to senior citizens.
