Established in 1976 Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk (VIBS) has been a pioneer in the domestic violence and rap crisis movements. Or mission is to assist adult and child survivors of domestic violence, rape, sexual assault and trafficking; to prevent the incidence of these crimes through education and services; and to raise community awareness of the need for justice and compassion for victims.
About This Cause
VIBS Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center, was established in 1976 as the Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk. Since its founding 40 years ago, VIBS has been a pioneer in developing effective services for survivors of all ages. VIBS prides itself on the provision of services that empower survivors of violence and promote dignity, self-sufficiency and safety. VIBS is the sole non-residential domestic violence service agency and rape crisis service agency in Suffolk County, New York. VIBS will serve over 7,000 survivors of child sexual abuse, domestic violence, elder abuse, human trafficking and rape/sexual assault in Suffolk County in 2016. VIBS uses community education, advocacy and counseling to help survivors of violence in Suffolk County. We also run the only rape crisis centers in Suffolk County. Community Education--we educate hundreds of adults and children in community groups, schools, religious organizations, companies and other organizations about how to prevent domestic violence, child sexual abuse, elder abuse, rape/sexual assault and human trafficking. Advocacy--our advocates are experts in supporting survivors of violence with crisis support while going through legal or other criminal justice procedures. We help clients navigate what can be an overwhelming process when dealing with attorneys and the courts to ensure that they have the best chance to be protected and safe while dealing with these issues. Counseling--for victims of child sexual abuse, domestic violence, elder abuse, human trafficking and rape/sexual assault. Counseling is primarily crisis focused, but can also be longer term in order to ensure that any survivor can move on to a life free of violence. By offering counseling to both the children and adults, we are able to ensure a more holistic recovery. We offer both group and individual counseling. Group counseling can be important to survivors so that they don't feel alone and so they can share solutions. Our counseling program works hand-in-hand with our advocacy program to ensure that both their legal and mental health needs are take care of. We have the only elder abuse program in Suffolk with specialized elder abuse counselors and advocates that outreach to one of the fastest growing and vulnerable populations in our area. Rape Crisis Centers--VIBS runs a program called SANE which stands for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program, the only rape crisis centers in Suffolk. These emergency rape crisis centers are located in three hospitals: Good Samaritan Hospital, Peconic Bay Medical Center and Stony Brook University Medical Center. At the rape crisis centers, we have certified forensic nurse examiners that do a rape examination and help clients with their immediate medical needs. We also send a certified rape crisis counselor to help the victims with both their immediate emotional well-being and help them with other procedural issues that may arise.
