Mission Statement

The Arts Project of Cherry Grove is the oldest LGBTQ+ community arts organization in the United States. We are dedicated to preserving and celebrating LGBTQ history past, present and future through arts and culture and provide a safe, supportive environment where queer artists can express themselves without censorship or persecution. APCG is the heart of Cherry Grove, Fire Island, the foremost vacation destination for the LGBTQ+ community. We actively foster community spirit by promoting inclusiveness. We encourage all residents, guests and visitors alike to participate in our productions and events as performers, artists, and/or audience members.

About This Cause

Fire Island is a narrow, 31-mile-long barrier island off the coast of Long Island. Since the 1920s, Cherry Grove has attracted artistic, bohemian vacationers from New York City and its surrounding areas, naturally evolving into one of the nation’s foremost LGBTQ summertime destinations. The Arts Project of Cherry Grove was incorporated in 1948. Its first production was a fundraising event, the Cherry Grove Follies of 1948. Ever since then, the Arts Project has played a central role in the community life of Cherry Grove, producing a variety of plays, drag shows, musicals, cabarets, film festivals and stand up comedy that celebrate the talents and stories of LGBTQ+ people. Debbie Reynolds, Alan Cumming and Judy Gold are some of the entertainment headliners. We also support the community by providing AA and Al-Anon meetings, church services, bingo and jazzercise. In 2013 The Community House was nominated for inclusion in the New York State Parks and National Registers for Historic Places. Cherry Grove resident, Carl Luss, researched and wrote the extensive nomination papers which ultimately resulted in its official designation on June 4, 2013. The Community House is one of three places designated for their seminal importance in LGBTQ history. (The others are The Stonewall Inn in New York City and the Frank Kameny home in Washington, D.C.) In 2019, APCG appointed a Director of Development who secured $38,000 in funding to support our new program, Rainbow Connection, an intergenerational summer theater intensive that has young and older adults collaborate on an original variety show that examines and celebrates growing up gay. We are also proud to be the fiscal sponsorship for the Black and Brown Equity Coalition of Cherry Grove (BaBEC) until it receives its own 501c3 status and look forward to helping it produce the first annual Juneteenth weekend jubilee. The Arts Project of Cherry Grove and its home, the Community House, are proud to be considered instrumental in the history of the LGBTQ movement. We invite you to become active participants in this ever-evolving legacy.
