Mission Statement

Children only have 1,800 days from birth to the start of kindergarten. Each of these days is critical to their school readiness and success. ParentChild+s mission is to ensure that all children regardless of their race, socio-economic status, or zip code have equal possibilities from the start - we work with families, home-based child care providers, and communities to support not only early literacy and school readiness, but early opportunities. Together we are inspired by the thought that the more we work together now to level the playing field, the closer we get to an equitable future for all children.

About This Cause

ParentChild+ was developed in 1965 by Dr. Levenstein, an educational psychologist, whose dissertation focused on reducing the high school dropout rate by working with parents to prepare children to be successful. In 1979, ParentChild+ incorporated, expanding its evidence-based program into high need communities across the country. Today, the organization is working in 17 states and five countries outside the U.S.. In 11 states, we also work with home-based child care providers. ParentChild+ has reached 70k+ families since it was founded, and works with 150 sites and over 8,500 families annually. Our innovative two-generation program focuses on providing educational success and career opportunities to children, families, and caregivers in communities challenged by poverty, limited educational options, language barriers, geographic isolation, and housing and food insecurity. Once students fall behind, it is nearly impossible for them to catch up. Children who enter school already on the wrong side of the gap are likely to remain behind in first grade and in third grade, and they are more likely than their "ready" peers to drop out of school. For these children, this education gap correlates with wage gaps, unemployment, and even prison time. Yet too often we fail to make the connection between early childhood education and focus on how critical intervening early can be. We collaborate with communities to develop strong supports for young families and their caregivers in low-opportunity, under-funded neighborhoods, working with parents and home-based child care providers to build quality care environments, adult-child attachment, school readiness, and school success. We know that our families are more than stats, but below are some numbers to help you learn about them: -71% of participating adults were born outside the U.S. -62% of families speak a language other than English at home and 55% of visits are conducted in languages other than English. -91% of children are people of color. -79% of families receive some kind of government assistance ParentChild+’s evidence-based One-on-One model supports individual families with personalized home visits and the Home-Based Child Care (HBCC) model supports the diverse array of home-based child care providers (Family Friend and Neighbor, Family Child Care and Group Family Child Care) with intensive home visits during the day while the children are present supporting adult-child interaction, school readiness, and family engagement. High quality, affordable community-based early care and education is critical to successful futures for communities and families, leveling the playing field before children enter their first classroom. ParentChild+ is based on four unique pillars: -Reaching families/providers where they are: Families receive 92 twice-weekly; home-based childcare providers receive 48 twice-weekly visits, focused on supporting healthy development and school readiness. -Building trust: Community-based staff share a language and cultural background with families and care providers. Approximately 30% of home visiting staff were parent participants in ParentChild+. -Supporting adult-child interaction: Participants receive high quality, linguistically appropriate learning tools (Caregivers: 46 books and educational toys. Providers: 12 books and toys; art supplies; and copies of books for each child to bring home). They work with staff on enhancing adult-child interaction to build children’s language, literacy, math, and social-emotional skills. -Facilitating strong community connections: Staff become trusted advisors, connecting families and providers to community resources including food, housing, medical, and educational services. ParentChild+’s overall goal is to ensure children enter school prepared, progress successfully, and graduate from High School. ParentChild+ creates opportunities to reduce barriers preventing academic success, empowering caregivers to enhance their parenting skills/local connections. ParentChild+ participants have 30% higher graduation rates than their peers. Additionally, graduates: - are 50% more likely to be prepared for kindergarten than their socio-economic peers; - enter school performing 10 months above their chronological age; - scored 2.5 times higher on social-emotional skills than their peers; - are 50% less likely to need special education services by third grade; - outperformed the statewide average on 3rd grade state math achievement tests.
