Mission Statement

Neighbors Together is a dynamic soup kitchen and social service center committed to ending hunger and poverty in the Ocean Hill, Brownsville and Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhoods of Brooklyn, three of the lowest-income areas in New York City.

About This Cause

Since our founding in 1982, Neighbors Together has been fighting hunger and poverty with three integrated programs: - Our Community Café offers lunch Monday through Friday and dinner Monday through Thursday, year-round, feeding nutritious meals to 500+ people each day. We provide structured volunteer opportunities in the Café to offer skill-building, an increased sense of belonging, social support and self-efficacy to our members. - Our Empowerment Program provides connections to vital resources beyond food such as housing, job training, benefits enrollment, legal services, health care, tax assistance, counseling and more to stabilize the lives of our low-income community members. - Our Community Action Program (CAP) promotes our mission to end the root causes of hunger and poverty, by engaging our members in community organizing and advocacy efforts, while providing education and leadership development, to transform public policies that too often compound, rather than relieve, hunger and poverty. We passionately believe that hunger and poverty will not end until low-income and working class people are actively involved in shaping anti-poverty policy. The 12,000+ low-income men, women and children who come to Neighbors Together for support each year are often dismissed by society at large as "homeless" or "welfare mother" or "drug addict." At Neighbors Together we see the human faces behind these labels. Many of our members have fallen on sudden hard times: senior citizens who have worked their whole lives but now must scrape by on insufficient Social Security checks, women and men who have recently lost jobs, victims of domestic violence. Others have been struggling with poverty for a lifetime. Together our three programs foster the overall empowerment of low-income people: providing nutritious lunch and dinner meals five days a week, providing supportive advocacy, case management and referral services, and connecting our members to broader organizing initiatives that challenge the underlying conditions that perpetuate poverty. No other organization in the neighborhood leverages its food services as a springboard to job training, counseling and community empowerment. Neighbors Together is a beacon of hope to the most vulnerable New Yorkers, offering a sense of home, belonging, stability and personal agency for our members. In 2024, Neighbors Together was selected as a McKenzie Scott Yield Giving Awardee, a national award designed to support grassroots organizations working with people and in places experiencing the greatest need in the United States.
