Mission Statement
RAICES' mission is to respond to the unmet needs of the Latino, African-American, and low-income community and seeks to improve their quality of life through advocacy and the direct provision of targeted services with work across generations with a particular emphasis on the needs of older adults.
About This Cause
The Spanish Speaking Elderly Council - RAICES is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded and incorporated in 1978 by retired Latinos who identified the need for an organization that would provide services, education and access to critical resources for low-income, Latino, older adults residing in Brooklyn. Today, RAICES provides a continuum of services focusing on promoting and maintaining health and wellness for older adults. We currently operate five senior centers, located in Brooklyn and four in Queens, an outpatient behavioral health clinic, and a case assistance program. Our vision is to continue to create a community where older adults' multifaceted needs are seen, heard, and addressed in a culturally and linguistically-relevant manner. Our eleven programs offer direct services to 3,000-plus individuals annually. The RAICES ACCESS program helps participants navigate the complicated institutional system of obtaining benefits and entitlements, addressing housing issues, among other critical services. Our senior center services include: nutritional breakfast and lunch meals, health, and wellness activities such as Tai-Chi & Zumba, educational and nutritional presentations, fall prevention workshops, financial literacy classes, knitting, women's support groups, theater classes, computer & technology classes, behavioral health workshops, common pantry, health-related screenings and more. Raices Casa BienEstar, the first licensed outpatient geriatric behavioral health clinic in Brooklyn, addresses the multi-faceted and holistic behavioral health needs of low-income, immigrant adults and older adults. We offer the following services through an in-person and telemental health modality: • the implementation of a culturally and linguistically relevant service modality, which includes customized person-centered treatment (including external support systems) • a full array of outpatient behavioral health services and support • crisis intervention • treatment for depression and anxiety and other behavioral health conditions and a robust community-based outreach modality. • Also, the clinic complements these services with case assistance services and the provision of effective linkages with other service providers. We offer services to adults and older adults (18 years of age and older) without regard to their race, religion, creed, color, sex, disability, national origin, sexual orientation, or immigration status. Raices Casa BienEstar is also a teaching agency, preparing future counselors and social work interns with their career endeavors. Our ultimate goal is to provide culturally relevant services designed to reduce symptoms, provide on-going support, reduce hospitalizations, improve and maintain social functioning and teach clients coping skills enabling them to live independent, socially engaged, and healthy lives. Another critical accomplishment that speaks to RAICES' commitment is its offering of a three-tier model program at Raices Times Plaza Neighborhood Senior Center. This "one-stop-shop" wrap-around service modality highlights our commitment to service and allegiance to the principles stated in our vision and mission. This program has proven to be a creative, healthy methodology through its provision of nutritional, social, and behavioral health needs under one roof. This approach added a layer of accessibility to services not provided by larger, non-community based providers.
