Mission Statement
The mission of the David & Dovetta Wilson Scholarship Fund is to award scholarships to selected Seniors attending Public High Schools in the United States and to promote academic achievement and excellence.
About This Cause
The David and Dovetta Wilson Scholarship Fund (DDWSF ) was established on May 26, 1990 by the nine children of David and Dovetta Wilson, as a living tribute to their mother, Dovetta, and in loving memory of their father, David Sr. David Wilson, son of a slave, was the seventh of eleven children, born in South Carolina. He completed eighth grade and came to New York in 1935. Dovetta, the daughter of a Baptist minister and the tenth of fourteen children, came to New York in 1940. David and Dovetta met and married in New York and reared their family of nine ---five boys, four girls--in the Lincoln Houses, a public housing project, in Harlem, New York City. Though denied a formal education in the segregated south, both David and Dovetta taught their children that education is the key to attaining goals in life. The children were also taught the importance of making a contribution to the community. David Wilson was always telling his children that those best able to give something back to Harlem had moved on. “He named off certain families that had left, including us,” recalled Carolyn C. Blair, the youngest Wilson. “He said, ‘Don’t be like that. This is where you grew up, got your roots, your training. Give something back.“ And so, in 1990, the nine children decided to pool their limited resources to provide scholarships to students in Harlem and across the nation. The David & Dovetta Wilson Scholarship Fund (DDWSF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization dedicated to assisting America’s young people with their quest for higher education. We are a private, volunteer-driven fund and dispense nine awards per year to deserving high school seniors that plan to attend accredited colleges and universities. Wilson Fund Scholarship Recipients excel academically, engage in civic and religious acts of service, and demonstrate a commitment to use their education to give back to our local, state and national communities.
