Mission Statement

Through its mission, Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM) invites visitors of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to explore freely, discover their passions, and appreciate the community and the world we share. At LICM, we believe that children learn best by seeing, touching, and doing and are motivated to learn when they are having fun. The children’s museum is home to 14 hands‐on, interactive exhibit galleries; the award winning outdoor Our Backyard exhibit; world‐class theatre, music and dance performances in our state‐of‐the‐art 145 seat theatre and ongoing educational programs for children, teachers, and parents providing visitors with a fresh, creative and stimulating environment with every visit.

About This Cause

The Long Island Children’s Museum was recently named one of 10 recipients of this year’s National Medal for Museum and Library Service at a White House ceremony. The National Medal, the nation’s highest honor conferred on museums and libraries, is presented to organizations that demonstrate extraordinary civic, educational, economic, environmental, and social contributions In 2010 LICM was honored to receive Bank of America’s Neighborhood Builders Award recognizing “the most impactful not-for-profits in the nation.” The Museum received this award in support of its community outreach initiative, Good to Go (Ready for School, Ready for Learning, Ready for Life). This initiative offers innovative programs for low-income families and high-need school districts on Long Island. Educational enrichment, kindergarten readiness, science partnership and parenting programs are highlights of LICM’s diverse program offerings for our community’s most vulnerable schools and families. "Good to Go"-- The Museum’s overarching community outreach initiative, offers programs for children and families not traditionally served by cultural institutions. Nearly all of the people reached through Good to Go community programs are from low-income backgrounds and represent a diversity of cultural and racial population groups. LICM is philosophically committed to providing programs free of charge to these families and to serving a culturally diverse audience. We rely on the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations for support of these impactful initiatives: "KICKstart" (Kids Ideas Create Knowledge) is an enrichment program that builds long-term relationships with families in underserved communities to increase parental involvement in children's learning. "Together to Kindergarten" is a kindergarten-readiness program that provides daily English language immersion and school-readiness classes for children of participating families, as well as weekly workshops for caregivers to assist them in navigating the U.S. school system. The "Westbury STEM Partnership" is a substantive collaboration between LICM and the Westbury School District to develop a school-museum teaching model that expands the district’s science education program and makes the educational resources of LICM available to students, teachers and families. "Be Together, Learn Together" was developed with the Nassau County Dept. of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Nassau County Family Court, and a National Advisory Committee to respond directly to the needs of parents in Family Court, foster care families, and families utilizing DHHS Services. The Children’s Museum welcomes more than 255,000 visitors annually and provides subsidized school visits to over 28,000 school children from 300 schools in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens. LICM is a not‐for‐profit institution chartered by the New York State Board of Regents.
