About This Cause

The Shorefront YM-YWHA of Brighton-Manhattan Beach, Inc. (most commonly called the Shorefront Y) is a Jewish community center and settlement house that knows how to help: poor and vulnerable residents and others who are at risk to receive needed benefits and assistance find support at the Shorefront Y; immigrants learn English, adapt to life in the U.S., become citizens, and gain jobs; elderly residents of our area are helped to maintain their independence within the community; children and youth build social, academic, leadership, and emotional skills and develop healthful lifestyles; people with disabilities are helped to maximize their potentials and become part of an inclusive and welcoming community; those affected by Superstorm Sandy continue to recover and grow better prepared for future events through the direct service and advocacy efforts provided by the Shorefront Y; we build collaborations with diverse community organizations which benefit everyone; we strengthen ties between the Jewish and other racial, ethnic and religious groups. In the past year more than 16,000 people participated in Shorefront Y programs including: more than 3,000 aided by our Single Stop, case management and other social services programs funded through philanthropic and government sources; 1600 in our 72 distinct class cycles of English as a Second Language (ESL), ESL/Civics, Adult Basic Education (ABE), and Citizenship classes; 1,350 Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Retirement Community members (NNORC) and members of the JASA (Jewish Association Serving the Aging) senior center at the Shorefront Y; 800 children and youth in our pre-school, after school, teen, community service, and camping programs; 3500 children in our nursery school and youth programs, holiday celebrations, and PJ Library Program; 520 children per month (873 different students so far in FY 2014) in our Shorefront Y Lenny Krayzelburg JCC Swim Academy; 350-400 children in sports classes, 1800 adults participated in cultural arts programming; 400 children, youth, and adults enrolled in mainstreamed and specialized programs for those with disabilities; at least 2,000 people are served through adult workshops, town hall meetings, trainings, health fairs, civic events, etc. and more than 350 families received and most continue to receive extended Sandy recovery assistance from the Shorefront Y. We are able to effectively help so many people for several reasons. The Shorefront Y hires highly skilled American-born and émigré staff members who share backgrounds and speak the languages of the Jews in the communities we serve. The Shorefront Y is deeply committed to continuously improving its programs and promoting the professional development of its staff. The amount of time we devote to staff development significantly exceeds funders’ expectations in all of our major programs. Our programs are high quality as evidenced by strong enrollment, waiting lists for space-limited offerings, strong attendance, and outstanding evaluation reports by outside monitors. We are proud to be a network agency of the UJA-Federation of New York, a member organization of the JCC Association of North America and United Neighborhood Houses of NY.
