About This Cause

Founded in 1982, Bread and Life is a faith-based emergency food and social services organization. Bread and Life’s mission is to bring food and assistance to the poor and accompany them on their journey to wholeness by providing necessary social services. Bread and Life began its work as a small, church-based soup kitchen located at St. John the Baptist parish in Brooklyn. Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s the program expanded annually, increasing its capacity to meet the growing needs of the people it served beyond the church boundaries. In 2008, Bread and Life became a freestanding organization when it purchased and redesigned a former factory building in Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Stuy). Today, Bread and Life is the largest provider of emergency food in Brooklyn and an anchor in the Bed-Stuy community: a crucial provider of basic needs assistance and a key voice for Brooklyn in the fight against hunger in New York City. Bread and Life provides help to over 37,000 individuals in poverty-stricken communities throughout Brooklyn and Queens.
