About This Cause
All of Bridge Street’s programs and activities are designed to promote and advance financial empowerment, social justice and racial equity. Bridge Street’s activities are primarily focused in NYC Planning Brooklyn Community District 3/ Brooklyn Council District 36, which encompasses the Bedford Stuyvesant / Northern Crown Heights neighborhoods. According to a recently published 2020 Census Council District Profile prepared jointly by Hester Street, United Way of NYC and the New York Immigration Coalition, of the estimated 187,400 total population in these neighborhoods, 79% of residents identify as Black or Latino; 30% of households live below the poverty line; 25% have no internet access; and 10% of residents reside in public housing. Our vision is to preserve Bedford-Stuyvesant and the adjacent neighborhoods of central and eastern Brooklyn as desirable neighborhoods for raising families, owning businesses and taking part in rich cultural, spiritual and recreational opportunities. Our motto, “Building on Community Strength,” describes our core belief that the most effective way to improve a community is to develop and promote local assets, including people, homes, businesses, and organizations. Bridge Street primarily operates six distinct but interrelated Program Areas: Youth Development / Workforce Development Senior Services Community Engagement, Organizing & Advocacy Affordable Housing / Real Estate Development Economic Development Financial Literacy & Empowerment These Program Areas have served as cornerstones of Bridge Street’s longstanding track record of providing critically important, quality services to our community. Our holistic approach to effective and sustainable community development also serves as the basis for our vision for the future growth of our organization and the expansion of our Programs.
