Mission Statement

The Arava Institute is an environmental and academic institution in the Middle East, dedicated to preparing future leaders from Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and around the world to cooperatively solve the regional and global challenges of our time.

About This Cause

Located on Kibbutz Ketura in southern Israel, the Institute offers the only academic program in the Middle East that provides Israelis, Palestinians, Jordanians, and other international students and researchers an opportunity to work together for an extended period of time. Today, the Institute’s growing network of academics, activists, students and professionals are forming cross-border projects, running NGOs, and holding policy positions – all of which demonstrate their abilities to cooperate around innovative solutions to address their communities’ and the region’s environmental problems. The Arava Institute continues to demonstrate that a common denominator such as the environment can provide a focus for partnership and cooperation and create a bridge transcending political and religious divides. Today, there are more than 1000 Arava Institute alumni, many of whom work in the environmental, social justice, and public service sectors. Each day these brave individuals prove that the people of the Middle East can work together towards a better future for all who live in the region. The Arava Institute is home to a student body of approximately one-third Jewish Israeli; one-third Arab, including Palestinian, Jordanian, and Israeli-Arab; and one-third international students, primarily from North America. Under the guidance of leading environmental professionals and researchers, students explore a range of environmental issues from a transboundary and interdisciplinary perspective. In line with the Arava Institute’s mission to generate capacity building for conciliation, cooperation, and environmental change, students also participate in the required weekly Peace-building Leadership Seminar (PLS). The Arava Institute also offers post-graduate research internships. Interns contribute substantively to cross-border research at the Arava Institute through a defined project under the direction of a faculty member, while gaining a valuable professional, academic, and personal experience. The Arava Institute is also home to five innovative research and development centers. The majority of the Institute’s research is transboundary and includes partners from neighboring countries, creating a web of cross-border professional relationships and cooperative projects between the Israeli and Arab scientific communities.
