About This Cause
Established in 2000 by a group of concerned community members, Mixteca is a 501© 3 organization that responds to the host of critical health, education, social, and immigration needs facing the Spanish-speaking immigrant community in South Brooklyn. While founded by a group of concerned community members to serve Mexican immigrants in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, the organization has grown to serve immigrant families from across the 5 boroughs and welcomes people from Guatemala, El Salvador, Ecuador and many other Latin American countries. The majority of Mixteca’s adult constituents is undocumented and live below the poverty level. Most have low levels of education/literacy. According to a recent survey of community members, almost half live in households earning $10,000 or less per year. Approximately 80% of those served at Mixteca are women. Over the past two decades, Mixteca has grown to become a well-regarded and trusted source of information and support in the Spanish-speaking immigrant community in the NYC metro area. Our deep roots in the Spanish-speaking immigrant community and our knowledge of the culture and language uniquely position Mixteca to inform, empower and engage even the most “hard-to-reach” immigrants. While founded 19 years ago to serve Mexican immigrants in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, Mixteca has grown to serve immigrant families from across the 5 boroughs and now welcomes people from all of Latin America and the Carribean. . The majority of Mixteca’s adult constituents is undocumented and live below the poverty level. Mixteca addresses these challenges by being a critical information hub and a safe place where the Spanish-speaking immigrant community in Brooklyn and the metro area can access free, culturally competent Know Your Rights information and resources, emergency planning, emotional crisis intervention and support, and legal services. Our small staff and board are working determinedly to make sure that our community is informed, safe and supported during this crisis whether through individual support, community workshops, or active social media presence.
