Mission Statement

Our mission is to advance STEM education to ensure all students, especially those furthest from opportunity, thrive and reach their highest potential as problem solvers and lifelong learners who pursue their passions and tackle the world's toughest challenges.

About This Cause

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, our mission at the National Math + Science Initiative is to advance STEM education so that all students, especially those furthest from opportunity, can thrive and reach their highest potential. We believe the advancement of STEM skills is critical to developing a future-ready workforce, and well-trained, knowledgeable teachers are the single greatest lever for advancing STEM education. NMSI partners with districts to provide strategically aligned STEM programming for district and school leaders and teachers that supports all students in building strong STEM identities and succeeding in rigorous STEM coursework. While our standard model centers around an annual contract (with the option for establishing a multi-year partnership), there are multiple entry points for districts to engage. This flexibility and the wide range of programs and services available ensure that we can meet the unique needs of each district partner. NMSI delivers the following services through the deployment of Program Success Managers and Coaches:  District Strategic Partnership: We collaborate with system leaders to establish partnership goals, develop a District Success Plan, and monitor progress throughout implementation.  School Leader Training & Coaching: Through success planning, trainings, school visits, and coaching, we support school leaders to develop, implement, and monitor progress against their School Success Plan focused on creating equitable and engaging pathways to post-high school workforce and aligning STEM curriculum and instruction across grade levels.  Teacher Training & Coaching: Through in-person and online training events, the NMSI Teacher Library, discipline-specific Teacher Villages, teacher affinity groups, classroom visits, and coaching, we add capacity at the classroom level by building teacher skills, knowledge, and practices in STEM content, pedagogy, and culturally responsive education.  NMSI programs have been studied in various settings, producing evidence of strong impact sustained over time. Based on data collected from the National Student Clearinghouse for 95,986 NMSI students from 2015 to 2022, students who participate in NMSI’s College Readiness Program (CRP) consistently outpace national averages in postsecondary enrollment, persistence, and completion. For students who had at least one NMSI CRP teacher in high school, 73% attend postsecondary institutions (compared to 62% nationally), and 59% attend four-year institutions (compared to 43% nationally). Furthermore, these students earn four-year STEM degrees at a rate that is twice the national average (35% of NMSI’s college graduates compared to 18% nationally). Impact is even greater for groups underrepresented in STEM: 33% of NMSI’s low-income college graduates earn STEM degrees (compared to 9% nationally), 28% of NMSI’s Black grads (compared to 12% nationally), 32% of NMSI’s Hispanic grads (compared to 15% nationally), 38% of NMSI’s Indigenous grads (compared to 14% nationally), and 27% of NMSI’s female grads (compared to 12% nationally).
