Project Esperanza

Mission Statement

Project Esperanza began as a Virginia Tech student organization in 2005. It quickly became a non-profit organization registered in both the United States and the Dominican Republic. Our work primarily focuses on serving the Haitian immigrant youth and families in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. We work together with many schools in the United States and Canada, mostly at the university level, who volunteer short term to help with various projects.

About This Cause

Project Esperanza primarily serves the Haitiain immigrant population of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic in the areas of education, social aid, and community development. Since 2006, we run a group home for youth that are either orphaned, abandoned, or separated from family in some way and end up working and sometimes living on the streets of Puerto Plata. We run two schools specifically designed to serve Haitian immigrant youth that generally have irregular migratory status and at any time could end up on either side of the border. We run these schools bilingually in Spanish and Haitian Creole. In the summers we run a volunteer-led English immersion camp. We also hold artist trainings periodically and run a fair trade art shop where artists can sell their products to the tourist and volunteer population. We do what we can to help beneficiaries gain employment and gain regulatory migrant status.
