Mission Statement

In 1869, The New York Foundling opened its doors to save the lives of babies being abandoned on the streets of New York. Over the past 150 years, The Foundling has continued to evolve from a respite home for abandoned children, to a comprehensive spectrum of community support services designed to empower vulnerable children and families. While social situations and our approach to mission have shifted with the times, we continue to share our founders’ belief that all individuals, regardless of circumstance, deserve the chance to live healthy, independent, and fulfilling lives.

About This Cause

The Foundling provides direct services to over 30,000 children, families, and adults in all five boroughs of New York City, Rockland and Westchester counties, and Puerto Rico. Our broad continuum of care includes: • Foster care, adoption, and trauma specific treatment for abused and neglected children • Support services for juvenile offenders and their families • A charter school designed specifically for children in the child welfare system • Youth Development programs for young adults transitioning from foster care to independence • Community-based family services • Casework and Mental Health Services for teen parents • Family crisis services, including a Parent Helpline and a safe haven for children • Early education and day care • Enriching after-school activities for youth in low-income neighborhoods • Services for people with developmental disabilities • A summer camp program for youth in foster care and foster care prevention programs • An educational program which provides children all over New York City with important safety information to protect them from abuse (CAPP) Our Approach The Foundling has been a pioneer in the field of Evidence Based Practices (EBPs), programs that base their service delivery on proven clinical trials that guarantee better results for children and families. From our alternatives to incarceration juvenile justice programs, to our mental health services for struggling families, The Foundling is generating far greater results for our constituents and higher cost savings through this tested method of support. In 2009, the Robin Hood Foundation began supporting our implementation of EBPs, and has continued to partner with us on this important work. Now, The Foundling is taking a lead role in helping other child welfare, juvenile justice, mental health and educational programs implement EBPs to ensure better results for the struggling children and families of New York City. Our Implementation Support Center, in partnership with the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), is teaching administrators and clinicians from our sister agencies not only how to implement these practices in their own programs, but how to sustain them and make them work over time. The populations we work with are often at great risk of psychiatric disorders, homelessness, incarceration, violence victimization, unemployment, academic underachievement, and dependence on government assistance. Appropriately addressing these complex social problems while remaining sensitive to the diverse needs of individuals can be challenging, but year after year, The Foundling’s programs continue to demonstrate outstanding results while exemplifying a caring approach to service delivery. By marrying strong institutional values with an outcome-oriented structure and a commitment to evidence-based practices, The Foundling remains sensitive, flexible, and responsive to the needs of its constituents. Our Impact The Foundling doesn’t just provide services for children and families in need – we help them build the skills they need to break cycles of poverty, abuse, and neglect. Our work has impacted those in need in the following ways: --Our Mental Health Services Program, offered to all of our foster youth over age 3, is showing remarkable promise in reducing the adverse impact of trauma, teaching children coping and socialization skills, reducing aggression and parental violence, improving parenting skills, and improving family cohesion. This year, we are pleased that the program has demonstrated steadily increasing rates of treatment goal completion and promising preliminary results decreasing the need for psychiatric hospitalization among our foster children. --The Foundling’s evidence-based work in juvenile justice has made an incredible impact in the lives of teenagers being tried in adult criminal court – helping them avoid a criminal record or incarceration, stay in school, and respond to their mental health needs. Those who participated in one of our alternative to incarceration programs, “Blue Sky,” showed only a 13% felony re-arrest rate 12 months after their release, compared to 46% for juveniles served in state institutions. --Our Maria Lucadamo Crisis Nursery, the only city-licensed emergency respite care facility of its kind, creates a loving environment for vulnerable children whose parents are facing a crisis situation. This Crisis Nursery provides a safe place for approximately 200 children in 115 families per year, and its Aftercare Program has a success rate of over 90% at preventing crises from recurring. --The Foundling’s Camp Felix summer program for youth involved in foster care and the child welfare system serves 150-200 children per year, and has received inspirational feedback from campers who felt that the program helped them connect with others and build camaraderie, self-esteem, and leadership skills. --Our charter school in the South Bronx, Mott Haven Academy, was the first charter school of its kind in the nation, with two-thirds of its student body consisting of children actively in the child welfare system. Through Haven Academy we’re able to improve educational outcomes for over 230 children in kindergarten to fifth grade while simultaneously providing our students with a full array of The Foundling’s services, all under one roof.
