Mission Statement
Ethical Culture is a humanistic, spiritual movement centered on ethics, not theology, whose mission is to encourage respect for humanity and nature and to create a better world. Members are committed to personal ethical development in their relationships with others, in seeking social justice and in practicing environmental stewardship. We believe that all persons have inherent worth and dignity and hold the potential to grow and change. We bear a responsibility to strive for a world of compassion, justice and sustainability. As an Ethical Community we are all part of something that transcends the individual experience and are enriched through our relationships with others. As such, we have responsibilities to each other, to the Society, and to the greater community.
About This Cause
For almost 150 years, the Society for Ethical Culture has been in the forefront of social action and social justice. From its founding in 1876 by a small group of progressives in New York City, it fostered social programs to bring better housing and education, jobs and justice to underserved and marginalized communities. In the early years, it built model urban housing, organized three settlement houses for immigrant communities, started a "workingman's school" (today, the Ethical Culture Fieldston School), founded a children's hospital and contributed to the creation of other influential organizations such as the ACLU and the NAACP. Today, it is active in the movement for environmental sustainability, prison reform, and local community support. At the same time, it has served as a congregational home for humanists - - those people of good will and conscience for whom the traditional religions are insufficient. By centering ethics, not theology, as the principal guide for our social interactions, for our work, for our public engagements -- for a way of life, we seek to better ourselves and our communities. We have regular activities for members and non-members including concerts, topical presentations, discussion groups, and social events. There is a regular meeting every Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. where a speaker will make a presentation - sometimes one of our own Leaders, sometimes a representative of an outside non-profit, mission-oriented organization. There is also a children's program on Sunday morning where there are activities to foster empathy and communication skills as well as independence and self respect - all in a context of discovery and fun.
