Mission Statement
Northside was founded by pioneering psychologists Drs. Kenneth B. and Mamie Clark in 1946; over 71 years ago. Their work—which showed how racial inequality negatively affected the self-esteem of young children—helped change the course of American history. The Clarks’ groundbreaking research, including the black-white doll studies, were critical to the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, which legally ended the segregation of public schools. The Clark's findings were the first-ever social science research to be submitted as hard evidence in the Court’s history. Today Northside continues the Clark's work by empowering children and families to succeed through our mental and behavioral health services and our early education, special needs and afterschool programs in New York City.
About This Cause
Northside Center helps children affected by poverty reach their full potential and access the opportunities they deserve, by providing the highest-quality educational support and behavioral and mental health services. • Throughout our history, we’ve continually refined and focused our services to ensure that every child who comes to Northside has the opportunity to excel—academically, cognitively, and emotionally. Our services fall into two main areas: • Our educational services offer students of all ages year-round, quality academic support, designed to address their unique challenges and opportunities. • When kids struggle in school, we’re there for them. We provide quality remedial, educational enhancement, after-school support, and enriching summer day camp programs. • Our Head Start programming reflects the best practices in early childhood education. Our curriculum promotes positive outcomes for children from birth to kindergarten and is designed to build upon children’s strengths and interests to increase school success. • Our behavioral and mental health clinical programs provide children and families with the very best in therapy, offering both individual and group counseling. • Our therapy programs reduce the effects of stress-related disorders that are triggered and exacerbated by poverty. The children in our care show measurable improvement in handling issues like anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress. • We deliver our programs with careful consideration—our goal is to make the biggest impact on the lives of children and families who are most in need. • We specialize in working with young children, whether they are typically developing or have special needs. We are highly proactive in our approach and know that a child’s best chance of beating the odds of racial and economic inequity is to receive support as early as possible. • We know from experience that a comprehensive approach to support—in the home, out in the community, and in school—is the best way to meet the individualized needs of every child and family and set them up for success. • We ensure that we take the time to get to know and care about each of our children—and their families—so Northside’s staff can craft a holistic program that is right for each child. There is a sense of family that envelops all those who have been touched by Northside • We teach children and their families to communicate and understand one another. We treat children and families as a unit—comprehensively and with compassion. • We work in neighborhoods with the greatest needs—neighborhoods that have been historically, and are continually, underserved including Harlem, parts of Brooklyn, and the Bronx. •. We serve over 3600 children and families each year and see over 1,000 children per day.
