Mission Statement
Children of Bellevue is about equity. We want every child in New York City to have access to quality healthcare. That’s how we’re building a strong New York. When we were incorporated, our mission statement read: “to initiate, fund, and develop programs that improve the health and well-being of children at Bellevue Hospital.” That’s still part of everything that we do. Just like Bellevue, our programs are open to children from all over New York City.
About This Cause
In 2022 Children of Bellevue served more than 45,000 children and families – and we’re on track to serve even more this year. We’ve helped more than 1.5 million children in New York City since our inception nearly 75 years ago. The patients we serve are nearly 70% Hispanic, 18% African American, and 11% Asian. Many are recent immigrants to this country. We have always focused on serving the most at-risk in our community and since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, we have seen the household income of the families we support fall under $36,000 annually – dramatically below the federal poverty guidelines for a family of four. All our life-changing programs below are made possible solely through philanthropic contributions from generous individuals, institutional funders, and community-minded corporations. • The Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Program with essential resources and supplies and arranges activities designed to enhance the experiences of young patients. We instill patients with a bright, realistic sense of hope that will sustain them long after discharge and help them find the strength and resources to prevent regression and self-destructive behavior. • Child Life and Developmental Services. Our certified child life specialists are educated and clinically trained in the developmental impact of illness, injury, and trauma. They employ a variety of therapeutic methods to help children and families cope, adapt, learn, and develop with and through their health care and life experiences. Throughout the pediatric services, our child life specialists provide developmentally and psychologically appropriate, family-centered interventions including therapeutic play, preparation for procedures, and education to reduce fear, anxiety, and pain. • The Frances L. Loeb Child Protection and Development Center, a specialized unit in the Ambulatory Care division of the Department of Pediatrics, has a team of board-certified Child Abuse Pediatricians, Clinical Social Workers, Child Development Specialists, and a psychologist. The Center provides invaluable services, such as comprehensive evaluations in a child-focused environment, forensic medical and social work assessments for adolescent victims of assault, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and trafficking. Services include post sexual assault medical care and treatment, crisis intervention, short-term counseling, referrals, and advocacy with law enforcement and legal services, both criminal and family court related. The interdisciplinary nature of the program’s services and techniques and the comprehensive nature of the evaluations make the Center unique among hospital-based child abuse programs. • Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national, evidence-based initiative that promotes early relational health, early literacy, and school readiness by giving books to children at regular checkups starting at birth. Parents also receive advice from their nurse practitioner or doctor about the importance of having daily, meaningful, language-rich interactions with their children. Children of Bellevue’s Reach Out and Read (ROR) was the first of its kind in New York and just the second in the nation to have expanded its intervention to the prenatal stage. The program has distributed more than one quarter million books since its inception. ROR creates positive social impact by helping families share stories, bond together and transform their lives by supporting parents in building the foundation for their children’s overall development through those positive interactions. • We Eat Together is our newest program, designed to address nutrition and food insecurity by providing weekly bags of fresh produce and non-perishable food items to low-income, food insecure families with a child receiving ongoing outpatient medical treatment.
