Mission Statement
WCS saves wildlife and wild places worldwide through science, conservation action, education, and inspiring people to value nature.
About This Cause
The Wildlife Conservation Society was founded in 1895 as the New York Zoological Society. WCS first took a stand for conservation in the early 1900s when we successfully helped the American bison recover on the Western Plains. Today, we protect many of the world's iconic creatures here and abroad, including gorillas in the Congo, tigers in India, wolverines in the Yellowstone Rockies, and ocean giants in our world's amazing seascapes. In New York, WCS's five urban parks - the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, and the New York Aquarium - cultivate a reverence for wild nature among more than 4,000,000 visitors each year. We uniquely combine the resources of our New York wildlife parks with field projects around the globe to connect people to hundreds of different species and the landscapes on which they depend, provide leadership in environmental education, and help sustain our planet's biological diversity. Guests leave our zoos and aquarium with a deeper understanding of the critical threats facing countless species across the Earth.
