Mission Statement
The mission of Project Renewal, Inc. (PRI) is to end the cycle of homelessness by empowering individuals and families to renew their lives with health, homes, and jobs.
About This Cause
PRI began in 1967 as a pioneering 48-bed alcohol detoxification program on the Bowery, and today we serve 15,000+ individuals who are chronically homeless or at risk of becoming homeless across NYC. Our clients comprise our communities’ most vulnerable—a majority are unemployed, uninsured, and/or managing other life challenges. Because homelessness results from myriad factors that must be met with innovative and adaptable interventions, PRI works closely with clients through a continuum of care that includes quality housing, healthcare, and workforce development services. PRI housing programs consist of seven emergency shelters, five transitional homes, and eight permanent supportive housing facilities. More than just a roof over our clients’ heads, we embed critical support services in each building to meet residents’ short-term needs and long-term goals. We also operate four shelter-based primary care clinics and three mobile medical units that deliver professional healthcare to those living on the street or without ready access to other care options. Our medical assistance further includes psychiatry, dental, optometry, occupational therapy, mammography, and detox and addiction recovery services. Our multi-pronged workforce development approach is at the center of our efforts to help clients achieve economic stability and lasting independence. We offer integrated education, vocational training, and job placement services to individuals who face significant barriers to employment, such as chronic substance use disorder, histories of justice involvement, low educational attainment, a lack of marketable job skills, and serious mental illness. We also run two sector-based training programs—the Next Step Internship Program and the Culinary Arts Training Program—that provide intensive and individualized skills training over the course of several months to comprehensively prepare graduates for specific careers.
