Mission Statement
Since 1968, Third World Newsreel (twn) has advanced movement storytelling and media arts for cultural and social justice. We champion the self-representation of historically marginalized communities—including Black, Indigenous, Latine, Asian, Pacific Islander, African, Middle Eastern, Mixed/Multiracial, People with Disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ individuals—through diverse genres and forms of media, such as documentary, experimental, and fiction. Our comprehensive support includes hands-on training, fiscal sponsorship, educational distribution, production and preservation, all designed to advance cultural justice and societal change.
About This Cause
Third World Newsreel (TWN), established in 1967 as The Newsreel, works in the following areas: Media Production Training, emphasizing the training of emerging makers from traditionally marginalized communities such as Black, Latinx, Asian, Middle Eastern, Indigenous and LGBTQIA+ and other marginalized groups; Educational distribution and exhibition of media by and about people of color and social justice issues; Preservation of its historical social issue films from the 1960s/70s; Production of social issue films; and Fiscal Sponsorship of social issue projects, prioritizing projects by and about people of color. TWN has trained thousands of media makers of color over the years, with many Production Workshop graduates making important and award winning social issue films.
