Mission Statement
The Little Orchestra Society (L.O.S.) presents programming in ways that inspire, educate, and engage New Yorkers of all ages, while creating a new model for a 21st century orchestra that emphasizes connections with the community. Based on our belief that L.O.S. is “An Orchestra for All New Yorkers,” we build strong connections in communities by putting music and creativity directly into the hands of young people and their families in fresh, exciting, and life-changing ways. Our music education programs aspire to help children and families from all socioeconomic backgrounds achieve their fullest potential through the arts, whether in the concert hall, classroom, or community spaces.
About This Cause
Founded by Thomas K. Scherman in 1947, L.O.S. is among the oldest professional union orchestras in New York City. Under the music direction of Dino Anagnost from 1979 to 2011, L.O.S. became particularly well known for its family concerts as well as an array of music education and community engagement programs. Over the course of its history, L.O.S. has given more than 65 premieres and launched the careers of major musical talents in its concert programming for adult and family audiences. The Orchestra has a GRAMMY-nominated recording and many accolades and proclamations from elected officials. Past productions have included the Peabody Award-winning Happy Concerts for Young People; the Lolli-PopsTM series; and the adult concert programs Vivaldi's Venice, Sound Discoveries, and Music Under the Big Top. In his third season, Music Director James Judd oversaw the launch of the acclaimed new L.O.S. KIDS concert series, which has inspired and entertained audiences in concert halls since. With the departure of Mr. Judd in May 2019, GRAMMY-award winning conductor David Alan Miller has become the organization’s Artistic Advisor and is overseeing an expansion in the vision for L.O.S. which includes works by living composers, and commissions, in the concert season, as well as increased programming in Brooklyn. He is one of the nation’s leading experts on young and emerging composers, and, in support of his creative vision, we are undertaking increased work in this area. In the coming year, we are looking toward even more programming that celebrates new works by emerging and established composers, representing a diversity of backgrounds and cultures. The Little Orchestra Society’s core music education and community engagement programs, Musical Connections: The School Partnership program®, Live in Concert!, and Brooklyn and Astoria programs, provide students, families, and educators from culturally underserved New York City public schools, publicly-funded day care centers, and social service organizations with free attendance at our performances. All of our partners serve the most socioeconomically underserved communities in the city, based on average household income.
