Mission Statement
The Lar Lubovitch Dance Company was founded to realize the artistic vision of Lar Lubovitch, now one of this country's foremost choreographers. The company exists: (1) to CREATE new work; (2) to PERFORM those works in our home base of NYC and elsewhere (and to facilitate performances of those works by others); and (3) to TEACH -- giving people of all ages, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds, increased awareness and appreciation of dance and enriching their lives. In carrying out our mission, we strive for excellence, collaboration and inclusiveness.
About This Cause
One of America’s most versatile, popular and highly acclaimed choreographers, Lubovitch founded the company in 1968. In the years since, he has choreographed more than 110 dances for the company, which has performed in nearly all 50 American states as well as in more than 40 foreign countries. Over the years the company has appeared on thousands of stages and on many screens throughout the world, and both Lubovitch and the company have been honored with many awards. In just the past 4 years alone, Lubovitch has been honored by: US Artists (Ford Fellow), Dance/USA Honors, Prix Benois for Choreography, American Dance Guild, America’s Irreplaceable Dance Treasures, Juilliard (Hon. Doctorate), Scripps/ADF, UC/Irvine (Disting. Prof.), and Dance Magazine. The company is one of the longest-established and most successful modern dance companies in the world and has contributed significantly to the field of dance by: 1. Advancing the creative expression of dance. Through its large and highly acclaimed body of work, the company has made a major contribution to American dance and has expanded the possibilities of dance. Our creations embrace music from all periods and genres, but the company has an exceptional record of working with contemporary American composers and musicians, commissioning new music and incorporating live music. Among path-breaking feats, Lubovitch choreographed the first dances ever set to Minimalist music and created one of the most famous male duets. The company was also among the first to ignore, and then shift, the traditional boundaries of modern dance versus ballet. 2. Developing new partnerships. Collaboration has been a consistent element of our work. Though Lubovitch always creates each new work using our company, many of our pieces are developed with the needs and capabilities of other companies’ dancers in mind. 3. Fostering creativity in others. One indication of our large influence on the field is the fact that numerous dancers trained by Lubovitch have gone on to choreograph and form their own companies. Some notable alumni include Mark Morris, Doug Varone and Elisa Monte. 4. Service to the field. The company has long served the nonprofit dance community – through a commitment to mentorship, through leadership in service organizations (including Dance/USA and Dance/NYC) and through service on national and regional panels. Our artistic director and our executive director have both been honored with awards for their services to the field. 5. Service to the community. In 1986, Lubovitch conceived of Dancing for Life, the dance world’s first response to the AIDS epidemic. The company spearheaded the gala in 1987 that raised more than a million dollars for AIDS care & research, and the company has maintained, over the intervening decades, an unwavering commitment to the cause (supporting Dancers Responding to AIDS and many other efforts).
