Mission Statement
LatinoJustice PRLDEF is a national nonprofit organization defending the rights of and fostering opportunities for Latinos who live and work in the United States. Through impact litigation, legal advocacy, community outreach, civic engagement and leadership development programs, we ensure that Latinos have access to employment, education, housing, the vote and professional and personal opportunities for advancements. We also promote and foster leadership through programs such as our Next Generation Lideres and other legal education pipeline programs. More than 10,000 students have benefited from our legal education programs and many today are lawyers, judges, elected officials, corporate and nonprofit executives, and more. LatinoJustice has been instrumental in helping Latinos preserve many of their basic rights while also opening doors to leadership for tens of thousands of Latinos in our network. Our program pillars are: Criminal Justice Reform, Economic Justice, Immigrant Rights, Voting Rights and CAP Leadership Institute. We also work on initiatives to promote justice and self-determination in Puerto Rico and on behalf of Puerto Ricans in the states.
About This Cause
Founded in 1972, LatinoJustice PRLDEF is a national civil rights leader and one of the premier institutions dedicated to protecting the rights and opportunities of Latinos. Our Tagline: Champions of Civil and Human Rights Our Mission: LatinoJustice works to create a more just society by using and challenging the rule of law to secure transformative, equitable and accessible justice, by empowering our community and by fostering leadership through advocacy and education. Nearly 50 years after our founding, LatinoJustice PRLDEF continues to be an aggressive advocate for Latino rights throughout country. Our approach utilizes three core strategies: • Impact litigation to defend the civil and human rights of Latinos living and working in the U.S.; our litigation touches on everything from voting and housing rights to challenging anti-immigrant legislation and defending Latinos against workplace exploitation. • Pipeline education programs that give Latino students resources to pursue a law degree; this includes LSAT Prep courses, Lawbound intensives and workshops and activities for students interested in the law and civil rights. • Advocacy and community engagement initiatives that ensure that Latinos participate in daily civic life and are active members – and leaders – of their communities; this includes our Reenvision Justicia Network, our Lideres Young Professionals Board and our Cada Voto Cuenta election protection work. LatinoJustice PRLDEF fosters Latino leadership through many legal, education and community engagement initiatives, including litigation that protects the voting, housing, employment, education and human rights of Latinos. From LSAT prep courses and pre-law student academies to census outreach and youth civic engagement, our efforts to mobilize Latinos is creating new generations of leaders who understand the needs of their communities and are actively involved in meeting them. In 2014, LatinoJustice PRLDEF opened its first-ever regional office in Orlando, Florida. The LJP Southeast Regional office anchors our legal advocacy and leadership development throughout the Southeast. Particularly in the area of voting rights, our legal staff in the Southeast is helping local communities realize their tremendous potential at the civic and community tables. Our impact litigation, education programs and civic engagement initiatives touch the lives of hundreds of thousands of Latinos living and working in the United States. As our work has deepened in key areas of the country, we also opened satellite offices in Long Island, NY and in Austin, TX. Our legal advocacy has touched on every aspect of the Latino experience in this country, from day laborers facing discrimination in Upstate New York and being targeted by law enforcement on Long Island, NY and formerly incarcerated Latinx being discriminated against for employment to voters being disenfranchised through voter purges or discriminatory voter ID laws, LatinoJustice takes on the difficult cases that threaten the civil and human rights of Latinos anywhere in the United States. And we do so with the force of the network of Latino leaders and activists that we have built throughout our history. LatinoJustice PRLDEF’s programs and services are supported by private foundation grants, individual donations and proceeds from events, including our annual Gala. Revenue from the Gala particularly supports our education and leadership programs, which help up to 500 Latino students annually prepare for law school and participate in internships and other career and leadership building activities.
