BRC (Bowery Residents' Committee)

NEW YORK, New York, 10001-7213 United States

Mission Statement

Founded in 1971 by lodgers of Bowery flophouses who wanted to improve their lives, BRC is today a leading provider of housing and services to well over ten thousand of New York City's neediest individuals. Offering a hand up, not a handout, BRC asks: What can we do for you? BRC sees the potential in each person it serves and provides each the opportunity to find it through a robust continuum of housing and nonresidential programs offering health, mental health, treatment for addictions, vocational services, elder services, and supportive communities in which to live. Today BRC operates a continuum of 35 programs throughout New York, serving over 12,000 individuals, with close to 1000 employees, and hundreds more registered volunteers.

About This Cause

BRC offers a hand up, not a hand out. We ask one simple question: What can we do for you? In each individual we serve, we see beyond the moment: we see their potential. For each, we provide the opportunity to find it. Our work starts with a conversation, often with a person living on the streets or in the transit system, offering HOPE and opportunity. It's the first step in building a relationship centered on mutual respect and trust. We listen, and then we act, providing our clients with the assistance they need through any number of our 27 programs located throughout New York City. Building trust takes time and a compassionate, dedicated staff that perseveres 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, never giving up. The results make it all worthwhile. Close to 5,400 times last year someone with little more than HOPE took our outstretched hand, and a step toward home and reclaiming their life. Whenever that person is ready - dawn or dusk, midday or midnight - our door is always open. Our clients' needs are matched by BRC's rich array of services. Whatever our clients may seek, BRC has it: drug treatment, mental health care, comprehensive medical services, vocational services, and supportive communities in which to live. What matters more than what we do is how we do it. We don't see problems or illnesses - we see people, and opportunities. We don't simply repair a person's HEALTH; we help each individual to understand and overcome the challenges they've faced. At BRC, care is integrated and holistic. Each and every client is empowered and expected to advocate for their needs and to help define how these will be met.
