METROPOLITAN NEW YORK COORDINATING COUNCIL ON JEWISH POVERTY

New York, New York, 10004 United States

Mission Statement

Met Council is a leading force in the fight against poverty in the tristate area. Each year, we help more than 325,000 individuals move from crisis to stability through a wide array of services including affordable housing, crisis intervention, family violence services, benefits access assistance, and the largest free kosher and halal food distribution network in America. Working in partnership with our network of hundreds of emergency food pantries and distribution sites, Met Council provides vital assistance that serves and strengthens individuals and families in the neighborhoods where they live. As an organization founded on Jewish values, we serve all communities, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, language, or religion.

About This Cause

Since 1972, Met Council has been a resource for low-income communities throughout New York City and is widely regarded as a best-in-class relief organization. Today, Met Council provides comprehensive social services to aid, sustain, and empower struggling families, seniors aging in place, the working poor and unemployed, households in crisis, immigrants and refugees, and anyone else in need. Met Council’s Emergency Food Network was established over 20 years ago in response to widespread and growing food insecurity in the community. Since then, it has grown into the largest kosher and halal food pantry system in the country, serving over 150,000 people monthly through more than 100 pantries, 20 of which are directly serving the Muslim community.
