About This Cause

Founded in 1961 and incorporated in 1973, the CMENY began as a small group playing traditional Chinese music including Cantonese music, but soon expanded into a full-size Chinese traditional orchestra, holding two large concerts each year since 1978. These concerts remain some of the only opportunities for the New York City public to be exposed to the full range of Chinese traditional music, including instrumental works and instrumental and vocal works. The CMENY focuses on premiering large orchestral pieces in the US, so as to maximize the cultural enrichment provided to concertgoers in the tri-state areas. The organization also holds summer classes for K-12 students, taught by senior musicians in the CMENY, and has been responsible for exposing many young musicians to formal Chinese instrument training. Many of these students go on to further private study, providing a wellspring of Chinese music talent in the greater New York area. The CMENY servers additionally as a unifying body for local Chinese traditional musicians and provides a valuable educational resource for third parties in the US. Academic researchers, cultural event organizers, and educational program organizers have all reached out to the orchestra for services such as lecture-demonstrations, chamber group performances, and master classes. Bolstered by an influx of young, professionally trained talent, the CMENY is looking also to focus on reaching out to the composition community in NYC to broaden awareness of Chinese music instruments and encourage their use in contemporary musical works. To that end, the CMENY has been supporting and organizing smaller concerts showcasing new music works in a chamber setting, as well as featuring all-new compositions and arrangements in its large-scale performances. Among the “Chinese” traditional instruments, over 70% of them came from outside of China. The capital of China was like NYC in the world in the past, where many musicians from around the world traveled to China and brought their instruments and music there. Chinese musicians collected and preserved many of the instruments and musical genres from those historical eras till now. Therefore, in a way, the heritage “Chinese” music represents a version of the “Ancient World Music” which has been preserved till today. Many of the nomadic tribes in Asia no longer existed out of centuries of wars and political struggles across the regions. However, some of their instruments and musical elements were preserved in the heritage Chinese music that we still play today. CMENY's mission is to provide a forum for musicians to continue to share their unique heritage music with our community, and to bring this “Ancient World Music” back to the current world again, so that more people hear the sounds and music from the past. CMENY is a non-profit (501c3) organization which is composed of musicians from different parts of Asia and the Americas. The musicians in CMENY are not flown in from elsewhere, but instead live and work in the tri-state area. CMENY is an organization that is deeply rooted in New York City with decades of connections with New York City’s arts, cultural, and educational networks.
