Mission Statement

Harvestworks’ mission is to support artists in the creation and presentation of art works achieved through the use of new and evolving technologies. Harvestworks is a leader in the field, educating, commissioning and producing work by composers, sound, movement and visual artists that reach an ever-expanding and receptive audience. The history of Harvestworks is in many ways a record of the development of this work, and of the artists' impact on the ways technology can be integrated into the creative process. We are deeply involved in the creative process. Our primary focus is aesthetic; the technology is always a tool, an instrument to be integrated into the artist's practice. The Harvestworks facility – known as the T.E.A.M. (Technology, Engineering, Art and Music) lab - realizes our vision by providing an environment for research and experimentation where innovative practitioners from all branches of the arts collaborate in the use of musical instruments and interactive programs for creating and performing various art forms.

About This Cause

HISTORY & CURRENT PROGRAMS All our programs are designed to support aspects of the creative process from conception to presentation. Our workspace supports outstanding technical expertise, a high level of engagement with the artist coupled with well- equipped production studios. Our Artist-Engineers/Instructors are skilled in their practice — in many cases they developed and/or wrote the manuals for the software and hardware used by our community. For instance – Matthew Ostrowski, who wrote the manual for the software called LiSa by STEIM, recently was the engineer for Andrea Parkins and Jill Taffet and in 2011, R. Luke DuBois was the technical engineer for Bora Yoon in her project called ( ((Phonation)) ) that was presented in the New York Electronic Art Festival. Our primary community is the artists and general public of the Tri-State area, the audiences that attend our presentations, workshops and symposia, and the presenters, museums, galleries and broadcasters which present work made in our studios. The majority of the artists working here live in New York City’s five boroughs. We also reach artists and audiences all over the world through our Website. The Creative Residencies Program commissions artists and supports them through the production process with a wide array of professional equipment and the assistance of expert engineers. We have produced the work of over 400 artists since the program was started in 1982. Our expanded program, Creativity + Technology = Enterprise also adds an entrepreneurial spirit to the program that encourages artists to consider new business models to sustain their practice and develop their careers. The Project Management Program responds to artists’ individual creative needs: offering expert advice, technical engineering, classes and tutorials, and hardware and software design, designed specifically to develop their projects. Sponsored Projects gives financial, administrative, and production assistance to artists, sponsors their applications for grants from private and public funders, and helps the artists find venues for their work. Recent projects include grants for composers Sergio Krakowski, Joan La Barbara, Mari Kimura, Hans Tammen and Liz Phillips. Education and Audience Development Program includes concerts; exhibitions and workshops featuring innovative artists who integrate advanced technology into their work. The presentations take place in our studios, at rented spaces, and in collaboration with other organizations. We stimulate public interest, and critical discussion of art and technology through this program. Harvestworks’ fifth New York Electronic Art Festival, held in Summer 2015 took place on Governors Island, New York University, the Museum of the Moving Image and the New York New Media Center. Over the course of the year, we presented 54 events for 7005 people (an additional 60,000 heard Ed Osborn’s sound art work in Castle Williams on Governors Island).
