Mission Statement
Founded in 1982, the mission of Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen is to feed the hungry, comfort the afflicted, seek justice for people experiencing homelessness, and provide hope and opportunity to those in need.
About This Cause
Founded in 1982, Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen is the largest soup kitchen in New York State, and the second largest nationally. Its mission is to feed the hungry, comfort the afflicted, seek justice for people experiencing homelessness, and provide hope and opportunity within the community. At HASK, we believe everyone has a basic human right to food. No one seeking a meal or assistance from our social services department is turned away, and we advocate for sustainable, equitable, and accessible food sources for all. HASK is dedicated to making the lives of those we serve more manageable by providing consistent support and compassionate care that addresses every guest’s unique challenges. Our programs focus on the most vulnerable people in our community, including women and people of color, children, individuals with complex needs, and asylum seekers. Through its trademark Soup Kitchen, Holy Apostles provides over 1,000 hot meals each weekday to residents who are struggling with hunger, poverty, and homelessness. Holy Apostles also operates one of the largest food pantries in Manhattan, distributing nearly 40,000 pounds of groceries (including 15,000 pounds of fresh produce) each week. In addition to meals and groceries, guests have access to social services and workshops that help them navigate toward improved health, housing, and jobs. We couple our own social service program with various community partnerships, offering an integrated approach to address poverty, homelessness, substance use disorders, and family crisis. The organization has never missed a meal service in its 42-year history, including in the aftermath of a devastating parish fire in 1990, during the power outage and city-wide havoc caused by Hurricane Sandy, and during the global Covid-19 pandemic.
