Mission Statement

UHAB empowers low- to moderate-income residents to take control of their housing and enhance communities by creating strong tenant associations and lasting affordable co-ops.

About This Cause

UHAB is a nonprofit that creates, preserves and supports resident-controlled affordable housing opportunities. We work with low- to moderate-income residents in housing cooperatives and tenant associations to build leadership, democratic participation, and community through cooperation. UHAB's belief is that residents must be engaged as active participants and decision-makers in shaping and building their neighborhoods. UHAB utilizes cooperative ownership as a model for democratic participation and limited-equity as a tool for preserving long-term affordability, helping to create and preserve over 30,000 affordable co-op units across the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. Our programs address a cycle of affordable housing needs: from building resident power and organizing tenants as community leaders to preserving existing affordable co-ops through training, education workshops, technical assistance, regulatory compliance, and providing co-op share-loans. UHAB is working for future generations of affordable housing through long-term solutions: developing new affordable co-ops, creating energy efficient buildings and solar power opportunities, and strengthening housing policy.
