About This Cause

New York Theatre Ballet was founded in 1978 by Founding Artistic Director, Diana Byer, and has received national acclaim. In 2022 Steven Melendez succeeded Ms. Byer and continues her legacy into NYTB’s 45th anniversary season. NYTB is recognized within the dance community for its restoration and revival of small masterworks by great choreographers and for its innovative hour-long ballets based on children’s literature. NYTB tours family and adult programs both nationally and abroad. Its audiences know the Company for its theatrical expressiveness, high production quality, and intimate accessibility to every audience member. Additionally, NYTB is known for its LIFT outreach program for homeless and home-insecure children in New York City. Since 1989 LIFT enrolls some 30 children annually in a syllabus of 1-5 ballet classes/week for up to 39 weeks of continuous study + Summer school for those able to participate. In addition to scholarships, LIFT provides books, mentoring, tutoring, performances, clothing and dance attire, and other help vital for productive learning. LIFT has received numerous awards and has been recognized by the President's Committee on Arts & Humanities, the National Endowment of the Arts, and others as a model of national significance. NYTB’s LIFT Program is the subject of a feature-length documentary by Academy Award nominated filmmaker David Petersen which premiered at the Tribeca Festival in 2023.
