Mission Statement
The Children’s Storefront works with families to promote healthy brain development in children’s first thousand days of life (birth to three years), building a strong foundation for lifelong success.
About This Cause
The Children’s Storefront has a storied history of changing lives in Harlem through education innovations. Founded by poet/activist Ned O’Gorman in the late 1960s, The Storefront operated a tuition-free private school that served local K-8 youth. Through decades of work in elementary education with local youth, members of our team recognized that many students came to the school with learning deficits, trauma, and other challenges that might have been prevented through access to supportive programs earlier in their lives. Modern research confirms the critical opportunity that the first three years of life offer as a foundation for long-term health and learning. Within our Play & Learn curriculum, which is built on a method developed by Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child, we can serve the children and families of Harlem for generations, by facilitating interactions, from pretend play to reciprocal play, between caregivers and their children that reinforce cognitive, learning, and social skills. Our parent coaches lead participants through activities designed to build each child’s neural pathways by relating through play. We receive and integrate regular feedback from caregivers who feel the positive effects of our model, saying, “I am so grateful for this. It’s great to get these insights from you…because we’ve been trying to figure this out. It’s just been us - and I feel like now we have another team member.” We have built concrete feedback loops to ensure the needs of our community are being met, and make curriculum adjustments to maintain our commitment to them.
