Mission Statement

Founded in 1978, SAGE is the nation’s oldest and largest organization dedicated to serving and advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults. SAGE’s mission is to lead in addressing issues related to LGBT aging. In partnership with its constituents and allies, SAGE works to achieve a high quality of life for LGBT older adults, supports and advocates for their rights, fosters a greater understanding of aging in all communities, and promotes positive images of LGBT life in later years. We fulfill this mission through advocacy and by providing direct and supportive social services, social and recreational activities, education, and technical assistance programs both locally and nationally.

About This Cause

Since our inception, SAGE has pioneered many first-in-the-nation programs, including: • The country’s first full-time LGBT senior center, The Edie Windsor SAGE Center in Midtown Manhattan; since expanded to Harlem, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island • The country’s first Friendly Visiting program for homebound and frail LGBT elders • The country’s first LGBT Older Adult Drop-In Center (now “SAGE at the Center”) • The country’s first support group for LGBT older adults with HIV • New York State's first LGBT elder housing complexes being developed in the Bronx (Crotona Senior Residences) and Brooklyn (Ingersoll Senior Residences) To this day, SAGE serves as a “safety net” for 4,500 LGBT older New Yorkers who face the challenges of aging, but also confront marginalization and discrimination due to their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. SAGE offers a safe and welcoming space for community, connection and support through our network of five LGBT-friendly SAGE Centers across New York City. During the COVID-19 pandemic, SAGE is keeping LGBT elders connected with virtual programming and services. SAGE works closely with hundreds of community-based organizations serving and advocating on behalf of LGBT older adults to provide holistic services. To ensure that our LGBT elders can access a full continuum of services, SAGE partners with diverse organizations across the aging and health fields and the LGBT movement. No other organization in New York City provides this comprehensive range of programming to LGBT older people. SAGE’s unique role as a local service provider and a national organization allows us to incubate programs at our New York City sites, and export successful models across the country. SAGENet, SAGE's national network of 30 affiliates provide critical programs and social connections for older LGBT Americans in nearly every region of the U.S. SAGECare, our premier LGBT cultural competence certification program, draws from the best minds in the field to teach aging providers how to support and meet the unique needs of LGBT older people. SAGECare's impact is far reaching: over 45,000 professionals have been trained across 45 states. SAGECare training helps service providers create more LGBT-welcoming organizations—and SAGECare credentials help LGBT people find those trained providers. SAGE’s National Resource Center on LGBT Aging (NRC) is the country's first and only technical assistance resource center aimed at improving the quality of services and supports offered to LGBT older adults. Established in 2010 through a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the NRC provides training, technical assistance and educational resources to aging providers, LGBT organizations and LGBT older adults. The Center is led by SAGE, in collaboration with 18 leading organizations from around the country, and offers publications, fact sheets, guides, and assistance on nearly a thousand topics relevant to LGBT aging, including: caregiving; LGBT inclusion and cultural competency; elder abuse and neglect; Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid; health care; financial security and retirement; HIV/AIDS; and housing. Since its launch, the NRC online portal has been accessed more than 1 million times. Over 25,000 professionals across all 50 states in the aging and LGBT fields have been trained by the NRC and SAGECARE corps of trainers. The NRC cornerstone publication, "Inclusive Services for LGBT Older Adults: A Practical Guide to Creating Welcoming Agencies" has been distributed to tens of thousands of providers nationwide. Finally, SAGE's advocacy work ensures that the unique needs of LGBT older adults are addressed by our state, local and federal governments. We educate policymakers, conduct analysis, produce policy publications, and work with peer organizations to raise awareness of LGBT aging issues and the impact that policies have on LGBT elders. SAGE offers a variety of engagement opportunities nationally and in New York City to its corporate partners and their employees.
