Mission Statement

The New York Baroque Dance Company is a professional dance company dedicated to promoting the advancement of public knowledge of 17th/18th century dance, the foundation of western social and theatrical styles. With the premise that history informs and inspires our contemporary world, the NYBDC researches, reconstructs, reimagines and presents rare works as well as newly created works inspired by history, thus ensuring our dance heritage has a presence in the future of dance. We believe that history unites us and the NYBDC offers workshops presenting a cultural slice of time including Eastern and Western cultures. Through dance we make connections with music, art, architecture, literature, fashion and design.

About This Cause

Founded in 1976 by Ann Jacoby and Catherine Turocy to forge a path for professionals in historical dance (up to this time dominated by musicologists and scholars) the company of 10 dancers performs at the highest level nationally and internationally. It is based in NYC with regional centers in Dallas, Chicago and San Francisco who are financially independent of NYBDC but share costumes, talent and research. From street concerts in NYC to opera houses in Paris and London, NYBDC has collaborated on modern day premiers of over 70 lost opera-ballets including the multi-award winning “Le Temple de la Gloire” of 2017 with a libretto by Voltaire (a co-production with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra in San Francisco and the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles). We run workshops for professional and university teachers, dancers, choreographers and dedicated amateurs. Aiming to re-tool our field in a more diverse dancestry which includes Hispanic, Haitian and Native American connections, these multi-era workshops, virtual classes and lectures are a network spreading research through teachers and artists to the next generation. Members of LA Dance Project and ABT's Alexei Ratmansky were among our students this past year. In maintaining free access to all for our online vimeo site documenting seminal choreographies and a blog on our website, we reach thousands from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. These sites are heavily used by teachers and students in high school and college. Since our beginning NYBDC has mentored dancers: 5 have gone on to start their own companies, 12 are teachers, choreographers and stage directors. 7 opera singers schooled in our productions are now teaching period movement. Since the pandemic began, NYBDC has been offering weekly free zoom classes with over 550 members in our FB group which we are continuing out of sympathy for economic hardship. Most recently we were a consultant to Claudia Schreier for “Passages,” Dance Theatre of Harlem. Believing that history unites us, The NY Baroque Dance Co. will host in 2022 "Travels of the Contradance" exploring diversity in our dance heritage. Including live music, this workshop for teachers, dancers and historians outlines the evolution of the contra dance, beginning with the common folk of 17th century England to 18th century European courts where dances were recorded in notation, to the French Canadian and US Metis people (who trace their descent to First Nations and European settlers), and Haitian/Cuban square dances, and then to NYC and Chicago where queer and gender neutral approaches are becoming common place. This interactive workshop will be documented and classroom worksheets will be developed and made available to all.
