About This Cause

Child Trends is a leading national research organization focused exclusively on improving the lives of children, youth, and families. Founded in 1979, Child Trends provides practitioners, policymakers, foundations, and other decision makers with innovative research, independent analyses, actionable recommendations, and clear communications in a nonpartisan fashion to improve programs that serve youth and families. Child Trends’ research teams bring an array of knowledge across interdisciplinary fields such as human development, psychology, sociology, maternal and child health, economic self-sufficiency, population-focused analysis, and research communications. Our staff’s technical knowledge, as well as lived expertise, offer a unique perspective to lead cross-collaborative efforts for evaluations. Our work is founded on a thorough understanding of family systems, family dynamics, and youth development and supported by robust data and evidence. Our research staff work in over 34 states across the country, including our three headquarter locations in Rockville, MD; Chapel Hill, NC; and Minneapolis, MN. Child Trends collaborates with clients and provides strategic guidance to help them meet their goals. We have a passion and commitment as changemakers to conduct independent and actionable research. Our partnerships involve taking a strengths-based approach to learn about each organization’s individual needs. We value creating relationships with our partners to promote cooperation, trust, and transparency. Our top products based on public engagement (page views) include: state-level data and analysis on child welfare and child poverty; a review of the past century of research on Black families; data on family formation and births outside of marriage; the National Research Center on Hispanic Children and Families; and guides to trauma-informed care for children, developmentally appropriate early childhood education, regulation of AI to minimize its risks to children, and Indigenous knowledge related to working with children and families.
